New Year, New Habit |

And just like that the holidays are over and the New Year has begun. I have to admit that I enjoy returning to my old routine - with a few modifications, of course! For the past five years, my sister and I have challenged ourselves to make one healthy change to our habits each year. One year it was to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day; another to limit soda consumption to two cans a week; another to not eat sweets before Noon. The changes are small, but that is what makes them doable - and sustainable. I am proud to say that I've been able to continue those healthy habit changes from year to year. I encourage you to try it this year. Pick one healthy habit to start (or a bad habit to break) and focus on that. Experts say that it takes 21 days to make a new behavior routine. If you are up for a real challenge, you can choose another habit once you conquer the first, but don't try to make too many changes too quickly. Just like in running, doing too much, too fast, too soon usually spells disaster. My goal this year? To run at least three days a week, every week. I know that sounds funny coming from the owner of a running store, but I have had a hard time making time to run since moving to CT. There is always something else that needs to be done (like hitting the snooze button in the morning). But, for my sanity and health and the sanity of those around me, not to mention my desire to finish the Boston Marathon this year, I need to make running a bigger priority in my life. I know three days out of seven is reasonable even with a busy schedule. I've got one run in this week. Just two more to go. I can do this. Live Fit! Steph |
Schuyler's Shoe Review |
New Balance 1063 & 769:
Fans of the New Balance 768 and 1062 will find something new in these shoes' recently released updates. While most New Balance running shoes have traditionally been built on a foot-shaped last called SL-1 or SL-2, which was rather boxy and wide, both the 769 and 1063 introduce the new PL-1 last. This new last is designed to better fit the foot with a deeper heel to prevent slippage. The toebox has been made less deep to avoid the sloppy feel that many runners without wide feet felt in the previous models. The most significant change from the old lasts to the new PL-1 last is also a change that many other companies have introduced in the past year. The 769 and 1063, as well as other PL-1 lasted shoes to follow, are now gender-specific. The angle of the heel is slightly different to accommodate the Q-angle of women's hips. Women's PL-1 arches are now shorter and higher, while men's are lower and longer, to better match the shape of the average man's and woman's foot. The one downside of these upgrades, for some runners, is that the shoes fit much snugger than the older versions. While some feet that measure in between a medium and a wide could previously fit in a medium New Balance shoe, they will now likely have to go with a wide instead. As long as this sizing change is taken into account, runners will likely be very pleased with the great new fit of these two classics. |
Spike Week Contest Winner |

Congratulations to Coach Robert Rottler and his indoor track team at Bristol Eastern High School for winning our Spike Week participation contest in December! It was a tight contest this season as Bristol Eastern narrowly beat out Conard High School's team by one percentage point. Ellington High School was a close third. For their prize, the Bristol Eastern team receives a season's supply of Gatorade Endurance to keep them hydrated and engerized. If tradition continues, Bistol Eastern is destined for a great season (Tolland High School won our Cross Country Spike Week contest and went on to become the Class-M Champions). Thanks to everyone who chose Fleet Feet Sports for their spikes this year. Still need spikes? We still have a good selection of spikes left from Saucony, New Balance and Nike (including the kickin' Zoom Victory). If we don't have what you want, we will special order it for you at no extra cost. |
Now in Store... |

Spin Shorts: Spinning is a tremendous workout for your heart, lungs, legs and glutes. When standard bike shorts are a little too bulky, try these flattering spin shorts from Moving Comfort. They feature a thin chamois, flat seams, soft gripper elastic on the legs and a little splash of blue to make the shorts stylish. We even brought in sports bras and shirts to match so you'll be the best looking babe on the bike! (Sorry guys, these shorts are only available for women.)
Once a Runner: We were lucky enough to get our hands on 40 more copies of Once a Runner by John L. Parker, the book Runner's World magazine called "the best novel ever written about running". You won't be able to find this book in stores until April 1, and copies on eBay have topped $200. Our initial shipment of 40 books sold out in less than 15 hours. Don't delay, come in to get your copy this week. After these books are gone, we will not get this book again until April.
Limited Run Shirts: Our own staffers, Schuyler Schuster and Duncan Gerrity, have started their own line of running shirts called Limited Run because they only make a limited run of each shirt design. Shirts are numbered and when they are sold out, the design is retired. The designs are hand-drawn by Duncan who holds an art degree from Fairfield University and are screen-printed onto a high-tech, moisture wicking shirts making them perfect for working out. Even if I didn't know Schuyler and Duncan, I'd still say that the shirts are wicked cool! |
No Boundaries - Last Call! |
There is still time to sign-up for one of our 5k training programs this winter (No Boundaries and Running 201). I know it is cold outside, but think of how easy it will be to stick to your fitness routine once the warmer weather of spring rolls around. The time is now to start a healthy habit. Plus, you won't be alone. We will have a great group of nearly 50 brave folks like yourself to keep you company. You can do this! If you are new to running or have not run in a long time, you will want to join our No Boundaries group. We use a combination of run/walk intervals to increase your endurance each week. For those who have completed a 5k and/or have some running experience, Running 201 is for you. Both programs meet on Saturday mornings at 9:15am for 10 weeks (beginning this Saturday, January 10). Optional group runs will be held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 6:30pm. All practices meet at the store. Our goal race is the O'Hartford 5k in mid-March. Thanks to our partnership with New Balance, the $100 registration fee includes a technical running shirt ($35 value), a Timex 2-interval watch ($65 value), a proven training plan, knowledgeable coaches, seminars by local experts (nutritionists, physical therapists, personal trainers, massage therapists) and other surprises along the way. Call the store (233-8077) or email Coach Renee to reserve your spot today! Live Fit in 2009! |
Featured Race: Run for Refugees |

What better way to spend Super Bowl Sunday morning than by running or walking 3.1 miles for a great cause?
The second annual Run for Refugees takes place on Sunday, February 2 at 10am. You can chose to either run or walk the 5k (3.1 miles) distance. The race starts at New Haven's Wilbur Cross High School and goes through picturesque East Rock Park. The first half of the course is uphill; the second half is downhill. Splits will be provided at the 1 and 2 mile marks to keep you on pace. The finish line features a great post-race party including live music and yummy food. This year, participants are encouraged to support their favorite team with jerseys and costumes. The best individual and group costumes will win a case of Honest Tea and a gift certificate to Archie Moore's Bar and Restaurant. Race registration is $20 if you register by January 29 (($15 if you are a student aged 20 or younger). Register online here. Proceeds for the race go to the Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS). Over the past 25 years, IRIS has resettled over 4,000 people including 112 refugees from 19 countries in 2008. Several of the refugees are runners who can't afford running shoes. Fleet Feet Sports is proud to help these runners by providing them with gently used running shoes donated by our customers. If you have running shoes that have some miles left in them and are fairly clean (shoes from treadmill runners are great), please bring them to the store. Run for Refugees especially needs men's shoes from size 9 through 12. | |

Thank YOU! |
|
Thank you to everyone who donated their gently used footwear to our Boot & Sock Drive - especially Balega who donated 50 pairs of their wonderful socks and to staffer Kathy Payne who spearheaded the donation and delivered everything to the shelter at Church Street Eats. The quality of the boots donated was wonderful which means their new owners can enjoy them for a long time. Unfortunately, we did not have enough boots for everyone. There were over 20 men in line who needed boots after our donations ran out. Kathy also noticed that many of the men needed winter coats (especially those for larger men). With that in mind, we're going to keep our Boot & Sock drive going through the winter - and will be accepting coats too.
I also had a request from a local elementary school for gently worn kids' sneakers and boots and the Run for Refugees organization for running shoes. If your shoes, socks or coats still have a few miles left in them, please bring them to Fleet Feet Sports so we can find them a good home! If your shoes are too worn to donate, hold onto them until May. We will be collecting old shoes for Nike's Reuse a Shoe Program whereby old shoes are ground up to make playground surfaces. |
Free Seminars: Running Injuries & Nutrition |
 |
We've got some great seminars planned for this winter to teach us how to get strong and healthy - and stay that way. First up is Eric Kopp, the Regional Clinical Director for ProEx Physical Therapy, on Wednesday, January 28 at 7:15pm (join us for our free fun run at 6:30pm and then stay for Eric's talk). Eric is a PT, OMT, OCS, CSCS and FAAOMPT (aka he knows his stuff!). He will talking about running injuries: common injuries, how to treat them and, more importantly, how to prevent them. There will be plenty of time for Q&A. Next, on Tuesday, February 3 at 7:00pm, Coach Al will be back to give a nutrition seminar to teach us how to fuel our engines more effectively for better performance during training and racing. Coach Al is the creator of Runner Core and a professional coach (he currently coaches several of the nation's top triathletes).
Both seminars take place at the store. RSVP by calling the store (233-8077) or emailing Sean. |
"Run Easier, Run Stronger" Workshop with Coach Al |
 |
Due to popular demand, Coach Al will be offering another "Run Easier, Run Faster" workshop on Sunday, February 15 at 1pm (cost is $49 - a bargain for what you will receive). This three hour workshop is part presentation and part hands-on. You will learn the key elements of good running form and technique, how to optimally approach your daily training for improvement, how what is happening throughout your core and legs as you run impacts how you should train and key core stability and flexibility exercises to keep you injury free. Perhaps the coolest part of this workshop is a full gait analysis by Coach Al. He will personally analyze your running form and gait using the latest digital video/motion analysis software and will send you a video with his audio and visual analysis within a week of the workshop. Good stuff!
For more information, check out Coach Al's web site at
To reserve your spot at the worlshop, contact Coach Al at coachal@coach-al.com or 860-912-0818. Space is limited so that participant one-on-one time is maximized. |
