Happy Halloween!

Nothing beats a haunted moonlit night on All Hallows Eve.... And on this fatal night, at this witching time, the starless sky laments black and unmoving. The somber hues of an ominous, dark forest are suddenly illuminated under the emerging face of the full moon.

Seasonal Flu Shots:

From the CDC website: Who should get a seasonal flu shot? Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. While everyone should get a flu vaccine each flu season, it's especially important that certain people get vaccinated either because they are at high risk of having serious flu-related complications or because they live with or care for people at high risk for developing flu-related complications.

October 2011

Good afternoon:

October 31st is Halloween - the 'whoo-hoo,' sugar-fueled kick-off to the holiday party season. According to author Steve Almond, "Nothing on Earth so beautiful as the final haul on Halloween night."

Halloween is scary fun for young and old; my father's favorite yearly activity is doling out bite-sized candy bars for little (and, sometimes, large) vampires, princesses, Jedi knights, ghosts and goblins - all dressed up in costumes for their make-believe scary adventures.

Make-believe scary is entertaining and a diversion from the real-life scary of our turbulent economy, recession fears, frighteningly high unemployment numbers and the looming implementation (or not) of the new health care law. Real-life scary is a nightmare!

Why don't we take a break from our heavier burdens in this edition of ClientCall? We'll still keep you informed of relevant, breaking news about your employee benefits and blast out a BenefitsBulletin if there is critical information that affects you, your business and policies.

Let's begin with sharing some news about a startling new trend in job interviewing. Hiring managers now want to know ... do you believe in UFOs? Traditional job interviews are usually nerve-racking for most people; now, companies want to know if we've seen any little green men. Job seekers may also be asked which superpower they'd like to have and why ("Buffy" strength!!). MSN.com posted an article that lists some of these tricky interview questions and provides suggestions on how to answer (hint: don't share your abduction experiences). The article link is in our InternetIntel.

Kids and cars: regardless of the way one combines to the two, it's a potential parental panic attack. My nephew turns 16 this month and is planning an early morning DMV visit on his birthday (he may camp out, he's so eager to get behind the wheel!). We're not too worried about him; my nephew is a level-headed, responsible kid. We have no idea which gene pool provided his 'good sense' DNA, but we're pleased he has it.

Frightening fact: During the first six months of unsupervised, teen driving, the risk of a fatal crash is three times higher at night than during the day.

AAA.com created the California Parent-Teen Driving Agreement which outlines risk factors for teen drivers. The Agreement helps teens and parents establish boundaries and expectations when the kids take the keys and the car for a spin. Follow the AAA link in InternetIntel for a list of resources and the Agreement.

Okay, enough of the scary stuff. Let's move on to the upcoming holiday preparations. Carving pumpkins can be a dangerous undertaking, right? Sharp knives, kids, sharp knives and ER visits - you get the picture ... and we've got the video: Underwater Pumpkin Carving!

Happy Halloween!
