Sucrose Superbowl Countdown: 25 days!
Good afternoon:
It's officially Autumn! In Southern California, one can tell by ... well, it's hard to tell, isn't it? Of course, once the mercury drops below 70 degrees, we start dusting off our sweaters and winter coats. However, the next week we may have a heat wave, so don't pack up the shorts and tank tops yet.
Halloween, the "Sucrose Superbowl" as we like to refer to it, is lurking at the end of the month. The Sucrose Superbowl is the kick-off for the two-month party season and we should prepare, physically and mentally for the temptations that lie ahead.
Let's do an informal, anonymous survey: a raise of hands - how many of you have purchased your bags of mini-sized Milky Ways and candy corn? Okay, how many need to replace those bags on October 30th since your "sampling" emptied the contents of the bag? (This is not a real survey, so be honest.)
We all need a litle chocolate pick-me-up (dark chocolate is full of anti-oxidants and other good stuff, so if you need a treat choose a high-quality, dark chocolate bar and nibble), but everyone knows that too much sugar isn't healthy. Want a couple of good reasons?
First, let's focus on vanity: sugar ages your skin. It's not a wives-tale, it is a scientific fact and we have links to articles that prove it in our InternetIntel section.
Not to discourage you from seeking healthier food choices, but your editor admits to having a rabid sweet tooth (you really don't want to know the amount of or the risks taken to satisfy that yearning). Therefore, it was with some trepidation that we took the "Real Skin Age" test on www.you.docs.com (check our InternetIntel for links). Blame it on DNA, a long-term good skin care regimen, lots of water or just good luck, but the test indicated that our face is 18 years younger than our actual age! (And, no, we didn't cheat on the test!)
Still, we caution everyone to not rely on genetics or dumb luck; take good care of your epidermis and limit the sweets.
Second reason to limit the yummy stuff: weight management and heart health. We know, we covered these issues in past editions of the ClientCall, but this is a good time of year for a reminder before you grab that second handful of candy corn from the receptionist's desk.
Depending on which newspaper you read, you might find a column by "YouDocs." YouDocs also has an online site that you may want to bookmark. In order to use the site and take the "Real Skin Age" quiz, you must become a member. However, there is no membership fee, they promise not to sell or share your personal information and you may opt out of their email newsletters.
Registration requires a valid email address, a password (just for the site), birthdate and zip code. Once you become a member, you have access to a plethora of information in categories such as "Looking Young, Staying Sharp," "Soothe Stress," "Shape Up/Slim Down" (some of it tailored just for you. During the registration process, there is a quiz about areas of interest to you and that information creates a unique website experience for the user). We like this site and are happy to recommend it to you (with the caveats: check with your doctor, we accept no liability and the other legal stuff noted below).
Entrepreneur.com: The Network is Everything. Good networking leads to good connections -- the lifeblood of small business. We stressed networking in the past few editions of the ClientCall, but given the current economic climate, it's helpful to all of us to learn more about the practice.
Please don't forget to take a look at our BulletinBoard - there is an important announcement regarding deadlines for notices.
