"Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received. Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that feeling. Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse. "

November 2009

We're over a month into the Fall season, the days are shorter, football games are longer (maybe it just seems that way) and, if the mercury drops below 70 degrees, we finally get to don our sweaters and dust off our winter wardrobe.  Compared to most of the contiguous United States, it's a little hard to differentiate between seasons in Southern California.  As we muse on this brilliant insight into the shifting of the earth's orbit, a quote by David Letterman comes to mind: "Fall is my favorite season in Los Angeles, watching the birds change color and fall from the trees."

While it's true that we don't have the pleasure of watching the leaves turn vibrant shades of yellow, gold, plum and red, observe squirrels busily gathering their winter stores or put away our tank tops and shorts in exchange for cozy sweaters and pants of some sort, we do feel subtle changes as we move through the seasons.  For instance, around this time of the year, there is usually a decrease in wildfires, the heat waves don't last as long in Autumn as they do in the summer months and it can get chilly in the evening, sometimes even requiring clothing with sleeves.  (Only in Southern California do people wear turtlenecks when the mercury drops to 65 degrees ... while wearing sunglasses.)

Early November is your last chance to relax (unless you're at work - no goofing off on the job) and enjoy a little peace in your life before the holiday season shifts into high gear.  We celebrated the party season kick-off with the Sucrose Superbowl - Halloween - this past weekend.  Halloween signals the beginning of holiday shopping, snacking, baking and snacking - in that order. We all love the festive atmosphere of the season; the office decorations, break rooms filled with homemade goodies (and leftover Halloween candy.  One can gnaw on one of those little stale Mars bars for an entire afternoon - a real calorie saver!), the arrival of gift baskets from vendors with those little individually wrapped truffles (melt in your mouth yummy!).  It's a wonderful time of the year or at least it seems so in our sugar-saturated state of mind.

Ideally, we should all forego the goodies and chomp on carrot sticks, but that's just not going to happen, right? However, a little preparation for the food fests that begin in a few short weeks will pay off later - like on New Year's Eve when you want to be able to zip up that cute party dress/slacks or wear anything other than the Snuggie you got for Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa or the pagan Winter Solstice.

We all know that too many goodies add inches to our waists, but did you know that sugar can make you look old? Indeed, those frosted cupcakes, fudge and sugar cookies (not to mention the ancient Halloween Mars bars) might be the culprit behind the crows feet around your eyes, not just the villain that adds inches to your waist.  Let's put it this way: face lift and liposuction or a diet of broccoli, fish and sprouts.  It's the stuff of nightmares, no matter how you choose to work it out.  Read more about sugar myths and facts in our InternetIntel.

BTW, Ken was very helpful in providing us with all kinds of great info for this newsletter - sort of a potpourri of useful information.  Ah, potpourri - another cinnamon and clove-scented portent of the celebratory season.  We knew we'd find a clever segue for the variety of content in our InternetIntel section!

As we continued to sift through our bits of potpourri, Ken sent over a clipping from the Los Angeles Times regarding drug discounts with LARx.  The LARx Prescription Savings Card was introduced on August 31st and is available to anyone in the state.  You may download the card online or pick up one at various locations such as public libraries and community centers.

We've been hard at work, updating and reformatting www.robbinsinsurance.net. We added a Client Information Center, where you will find breaking news regarding benefits, locations and schedules for vaccinations, as well as links to other value-added benefits for our clients, such as LARx cards and more.  We posted downloadable Employee Benefit change forms and COBRA enrollment forms on our new FAQS and Forms page.  We take your privacy and security very seriously, so we will not post forms that with any specific policy information on our web site. However, we'd love to get your feedback and suggestions regarding robbinsinsurance.net - what can we do to make this site easier to navigate or more useful to you? After all, we created this site for YOU.

www.RobbinsInsurance.net is a client service site, not a sales tool (although we won't turn away referrals or new business : )
