This winter we're seeing first hand just how hard it is for animals living outdoors and the kind of appreciative friends they can be with our help.  "Moonpie" as we affectionately call him found us one evening this Fall when he appeared in our driveway from nowhere.  While he loves to be free we provide him with a heated bed, plenty of food and water and the safety of the garage when he wants it.  I pray each day that our efforts will keep him healthy and that he will be one of the lucky ones."

Animals rely solely on their human caregivers for safety and comfort - especially during the winter months," said Stephanie Shain, director of companion animal outreach for The Humane Society of the United States (http://www.hsus.org).  However, stray animals, feral cats, and chained dogs, all have to deal with frigid, inclement weather often because they have no choice.  There are 5000 independent nonprofit shelters in the US and a wide variety of animal care and animal rights organizations doing their part to help stray and abandoned cats and dogs survive the winter.  To learn more about how you can help please visit these websites:

Will President Obama's Promise of Change Effect the Non-Profit Sector?
Obama Poster The election of Barack Obama as our 44th president has generated an unprecedented level of excitement and hope.  For members of the nonprofit community his victory has special significance.  Obama began his career working as a community organizer, helping residents in the South Side of Chicago improve their neighborhoods. During his campaign, Obama promised to help strengthen the sector with 3 core initiatives:
  1. Enabling more Americans to serve the country by expanding AmeriCorps, the Peace Corps, skilled retired workers and creating America's Voice Initiative to employ Americans who are fluent in other languages to serve overseas.
  2. Establishing community service requirements into middle and high schools nationwide, expanding the YouthBuild program, establishing a new American Opportunity Tax Credit for college students where 100 hours of service can earn a $4000 tax credit, and ensuring that at least 25 percent of college work study funds are used to support public service opportunities.
  3. Investing in the nonprofit sector with a Social Investment Fund Network and a social entrepreneurship agency for nonprofits within the Corporation for National and Community Service.
  • How can your organization engage more volunteers in meaningful ways?
  • How can you build capacity to effectively use more volunteers in your organization?

As President Obama moves his agenda forward Managance Consulting will be watching closely to share our observations and insights with you.

For Profit Companies Agree - A Positive Corporate Culture Yields Strong Results
Heart Picture Jim Parker, the former CEO of Southwest Airlines, had tears in his eyes when recounting his company's actions following the terrorist attacks of September 11th at a recent conference on Leading Organizational Change held at the University of Maryland Business School.  He said that despite the dramatic reduction in air travel in the following weeks and months, the company immediately made a pledge to keep all of its employees on the payroll whether or not the industry recovered.  The management team agreed that if needed, they would forgo their own salaries for a period of time to ensure that there was enough money to cover costs. This is just one example of the core operating values of communal responsibility and caring for others that permeates throughout Southwest Airlines.  Other examples are the thoughtful way the gate clerks interact with customers and flight attendants and pilots care for passengers.  There is no doubt in Mr. Parker's mind that Southwest's corporate culture contributes to its continued success and profitability.

In strategic planning guided by Managance Consulting, we help our clients identify or checking in on  their organization's core operating values-the actions and beliefs that are at the heart of every high performing organization.  We believe, for example, that it is not enough to just say our core operating value is about "team work or collaboration."  More important is taking time to examine what teamwork or collaboration really means for your organization and how your organizational practices facilitate or hinder how you live out these values.
  • What values are at the heart of your organization?
  • In what ways do your core operating values influence great "customer" service?
  • How can you use your core operating values to enhance your organization's performance?

Think Outside LogoAfter 7 years working full time for Managance Consulting, we're pleased to announce that Paige Teegarden has struck out on her own with an exciting new venture that is is perfect for a spring organization or professional development workshop. Located in the beautiful mountains of Garrett County in western Maryland, Think Outside is an innovative consulting firm that helps individual professional growth and organizations perform more strategically and effectively.  We use our human connection to the natural world and new perspective from facilitated outdoor exercises to create transformative experiences for individuals, organizations and businesses.

What do we mean by 'use our human connection to the natural world'?

Drawing from the relatively new field of Eco-psychology, we believe that human beings evolve in relationship to their environment and in part because of this evolutionary relationship that our bodies and minds are 'in tune' with the natural world.  We can gain inspiration and comfort by being more aware and intentional in connecting to the natural world.  Human beings respond--body, mind and spirit--to nature.  Nature can provide a sense of balance, harmony, timelessness.  Think Outside provides our clients with simple tools to help them become more aware of the natural world at a personal/sensory level and then use the benefits to help facilitate organization change and individual transformation.

What do we mean by 'facilitated outdoor experiences'?

Think Outside uses four outdoor modalities to surface new perspective for growth and development. These are:

  1. sensory awareness (guided outdoor reflection)
  2. interacting with horses as mirrors of what we are unconsciously communicating
  3. adventure experiences (with ropes courses and rafting) and
  4. creative arts.
  • Where could you or your organization benefit from a fresh perspective?
  • What information would help you remove barriers to "try on" the Think Outside approach?
