Did you know that there is a new soon-to-be-released film called BULLY?
Facing History and Ourselves offers numerous bullying resources for educators and is pleased to offer a free download of the Movie Guide. The film BULLY follows five stories of children and families who are affected deeply by bullying within the course of a school year. With intimate glimpses into homes, classrooms, cafeterias, and principals' offices, the film offers insight into the lives of bullied, ridiculed children. Historically, seemingly small instances of labeling and ridicule have catastrophic consequences for the marginalized groups involved. This film brings those "small" instances into the spotlight creating a space to discuss the effects of bullyng. The accompanying guide tells the personal stories of those bullied, and suggests that improving school climate takes fostering a reflective and engaging learning community. Cold Spring Elementary News
Kim Williams' fifth graders at Cold Spring School made anti-bullying posters for the MARC contest.
Students wrote a letter to a "victim" and presented it as a poster. The class discussed the subject of
bullying first by talking about the bully, the victim, and the bystander. They brainstormed how a victim might feel and what they could say to
them to help (ideas for coping skills, how to avoid the situation, personal experience with bullying). After the contest, posters will be displayed around the school.

South Elementary School NewsSpace Invaders Ms. Rebecca Curries's fourth grade class was invaded by aliens. After choosing a planet to research, students designed an alien that could survive on the planet. The project included a detailed written description and presentation explaining how their aliens' adaptations allowed them to survive on the planet. "My goal was to have the students practice research skills and show an understanding of how adaptations help living things survive in a particular environment," Ms. Currie says. "They did an outstanding job with this and really impressed me with their knowledge." They are also working on creating a voice thread on the computer, which is an online slideshow narration by students explaining their alien and its adaptations. In addition to using research skills, the students also gained science knowledge while they were honing in on their writing, oral language, and technology skills. "The feedback was very positive," notes Ms. Currie. "Not only did the students seem to enjoy researching and creating the aliens, but they loved hearing about their classmate's creations." The creatures from outer space are currently on display in the school library.

Indian Brook School Tech Expo A Huge Success!
On Thursday, March 8th Indian Brook held its first Tech Expo. Students from all grades presented a variety of technology that they have been using in their classrooms, to complete projects, or to share information.
From Mrs. Loftus' class we had a group of children present their projects they completed around Native Americans that included an elaborate PowerPoint presentation. Listening to the way they were able to share this information with parents and guests as they went through their information was truly amazing!
Next we had a group of students from Mrs. Duggan class present how "Glogster" is used in their classroom. They shared how they communicate with one another in their classroom to work on projects, ask questions, get help, etc. all from home through their computers.
We had another group of students from Mrs. Riordan's class show how they use the Apple Ipads in their classroom. This became a very popular center as many of the younger students who attended the Expo had the opportunity to use the many exciting applications Mrs. Riordan's students were sharing with them.
On the other side of our IMC we had two second grade students from Mrs. McGinnis' room show our Expo visitors how they have used Flip Cameras to make movies. We also had a movie playing throughout the Expo made by the entire first grade that showed what we need to do to save the planet.
In addition to all of the students who presented, our Integration Specialist Mrs. Nicholas was part of the Expo. She provided parents with information on programs, both available from the Plymouth Schools, as well as those available on the internet to support their children in a wide variety of ways. Many of the younger children who attended took advantage of the programs in our computer lab and had a great time exploring.
This was an exciting night and the level of expertise from our students who presented was just phenomenal!

NOT AS EASY AS IT LOOKS!
On Friday March 9th Vanessa Corsini, an 8th grade student, took over Mr. Hall's Civics class for the day to teach a lesson on the Bill of Rights. Vanessa created a lesson plan, taught all five periods and did a great job. Upon completion of her lesson she was asked to write a reflection of her day as a teacher. Here is what she had to say:
"How do you guys do it? The lesson plan and the whole teaching part is fine once you're used to it, if you know what you're doing, but one person in a bad mood (not naming names) can put you in a bad mood, which puts the whole class in a cranky mood. Saying the same thing over and over again is annoying and you don't know if you told all the classes everything, so you end up not telling some classes and repeating it in others. The bell rings way too soon and not soon enough. You need more time so you can finish the lesson and make sure everyone is in the same place, but you want it to end because after standing for four periods straight, you just want it to end. I thought being a student was hard; being a teacher is worse."
Vanessa, on behalf of educators everywhere, thank you for your perspective!
