Cold Spring Elementary News

Full day and AM kindergarten visited the planetarium at PCIS this past week. The students learned about different patterns in the night sky. Students were amazed by images of the Big and Little Dippers, as well as Orion's Belt, among others. The students also learned about how the sun moves across the daytime sky.

Full day kindergarten has also been putting their art and maths skills together to learn about another concept: symmetry. Students were given three colors and tasked with creating an original image, then its mirror image. Notice the imaginative shapes and people that they produced!

Celebrating Seuss-Style

Dr. Seuss' birthday was a good excuse for some colorful celebrations in Mrs. Linda Shay's second grade class. Reading, writing, art and exploration were on the agenda to create a silly Seuss-like world.

Students connected with book characters as they wrote letters to Horton and the Whos to tell them about a good deed that they did. After painting their own hat, they transformed into the Cat in the Hat for a day. They also created mosaic fish from One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, and made up their own rhyming concentration cards in honor of Dr. Seuss' unique rhymes.

"They had fun doing different activities, but they most enjoyed making and playing with the famous gooey oobleck from the story Bartholomew and the Oobleck," says Mrs. Shay. "They were excited to find out how it felt."

A special thanks goes out to Mr. Reynolds, guest reader and parent of Carter Reynolds.

Pen Pals From El Salvador

The students in Miss Reid's and Miss Kyller's classes are learning all about the country of El Salvador. Students have read "My Shoes and I", "Alfredito flies home" and "El Salvador in pictures." They have researched landforms, transportation, weather, clothing, food, the language, animals, music, schools, and homes making comparisons to our country. Students located El Salvador on a world map and learned about the flag of this country. The students created picture postcards with the help of Miss Robbins in Art. We will send the postcards to the children of Tierra Blanca, a small village in El Salvador. These postcards will be delivered along with bookmarks designed in the computer lab with assistance from Mrs. Winsper. The children of Tierra Blanca will write postcards to send back to the West students, giving them all a chance to make a connection to diverse cultures as well as gain exposure to the Spanish language!

NMES Celebrates Math

Parents and children in grades K-2 came together Thursday evening for a night of fun and excitement as NMES celebrated its 13th annual Family Math Night. The event was characterized by a variety of math games and activities made specifically to address grade level math concepts.

The night provided a time for parents and children to talk, work, and play together while practicing math skills in a fun and entertaining way.

Parents went home with an informational packet that summarized the games and provided suggestions for related activities, while the children received a souvenir of their fun-filled evening.

A special thank-you to the teachers at NMES for hosting the event, to the high school students who volunteered their time, and to the parents who helped with preparations.

PCIS Students Take the Polar Plunge!

Last Saturday morning's rain did nothing to dampen the spirits of the many PCIS students who participated in the Jordan Hospital's 10th Annual Polar Plunge at Plymouth Beach! Spirits were high despite the drizzle as students prepared to brave the elements on behalf of the generous donations they had received for the Jordan Hospital Club Cancer Center.

The forty-six strong Grade Eight Falcon Pride Frozen in Time Team thought it was a "blast from the past." They were awarded the Most Creative Costumes Trophy at the awards ceremony held at the Plymouth Yacht Club. This was a wonderful surprise and most fitting as all students had tie-dyed their own shirts after school the week before, and no two were alike! The team raised $4,194.82 with Abby Noyes and Mallory Fey being the top fundraisers in the club.

The seventh grade Freezepops took the trophies for the Most Money Raised by a Middle School ($5,931.00!!!) as well as the Most Enthusiastic Team Award. The top fundraisers on this team were seventh graders Payton Reifeiss and Isabel Kierstead. With party horns and oversized joke sunglasses, the team was very proud of winning Most Enthusiastic and Most Money Raised by a Middle School Team for the second year in a row!

A special thank you to PCIS staff, Shane Stande, Mark Kelleher, Ann Marie Yule, Kim Sims and Judy Maccaferri the teachers who helped our students organize their participation in this event. Congratulations to all participants!

PCIS Student Going to State Geo Bee!!

Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography. Schools with students in grades four through eight are eligible for this entertaining and challenging test of geographic knowledge.

PCIS ran team bees in December and January, held by social studies teachers in each house. A school bee was held on January 11th. Approximately 50 students participated in the school wide bee. After several tough rounds, Ryan Devlin, an 8th grade student from Gemini, was declared the winner. He did not miss any of the questions he was asked. Ryan then had to take a test with 70 multiple choice questions to try to qualify for the state level. Only the top 100 scorers of this test qualify for the State Bee. Ryan will go to Worcester State University on Friday, March 30, 2012 to compete against the other state qualifiers for one position at the National Bee, held in Washington, D.C. on May 22-24th.

Congratulations Ryan!

PCIS Student Selected to receive the Governor's 351 Award!

Abigail Noyes, an eighth-grader at Plymouth Community Intermediate School, was selected for Project 351. This award is sponsored by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick in recognition of student volunteers from around the state. Noyes was nominated by PCIS staff for the honor. Abigail is a member of the PCIS Falcon Pride, a community service group. The group has visited local nursing homes and put together a team for this year's Polar Plunge fundraiser for the Jordan Hospital Cancer Center.

Abigail has also helped assemble gifts in this year's drive for Toys for Tots and put together food baskets for Thanksgiving. Abigail is also very active outside of school assisting in other activities and at her church's soup kitchen. Congratulations Abigail on this well deserved award!

Festival of the Arts

The PSMS Festival of the Arts took place Thursday evening, March 8th. Parents were treated to a student art gallery and other projects that included displays from the Technology Education Program, the Grade 5 Book Program and the Clay Club. The evening also featured instrumental and vocal performances by the String and Guitar Ensembles, the Jazz Band, the 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th grade band and chorus. Refreshments were served by the band and choral students. Thanks to Mr. Rich Maichle and Mrs. Amanda Hough; Technology Department, Mrs. Mary Lynn Mathews; Clay Club Advisor, and Mrs. Donna Ramsay and Mrs. Anne Balzarini for providing student displays. Special thanks to Mrs. Mary Jane Calhoun-Donelan; Art Department, Mr. Greg Tracy; Band Director and Mrs. Lea Tyler; Choral Director, for their hard work and dedication to a successful event.

Grade 5 Service Learning Project

Mrs. Anderson's grade five reading class is involved in a community service learning project. They are conducting a toiletries drive for the Plymouth Area Coalition for the Homeless. The students read a book in which the main characters are homeless. After reading, writing, discussing, illustrating, and reflecting about the book, the class decided they wanted to do something to help the homeless.

Mrs. Anderson read them a book to give them an overview of the causes and various situations of homeless people. Each student conducted research using the questions they composed. They used books, the internet, and interviewed a teacher in the building who works with the homeless. The shelter in Kingston was contacted, and it was determined that toiletries would be appreciated as each family that comes into the shelter is given a basket containing personal care products. The students will collect and sort the items so they are readily available to be given out at the shelter. They will tally the donations and construct graphs that show the data. Students used their marketing skills to design posters and collection boxes for the items. Facts obtained during their research will be read during the daily announcements so faculty and staff will become knowledgeable about the homeless situation in our country.

Flip the Classroom

Mrs. Judy Bradley and Mr. Rob Skinner, grade 7 science teachers at PSMS, are going to "flip" their classrooms next year. Using Camtasia 7.0 software, the teachers are creating unit lessons on video that students will be required to view as homework. Working from home and using the internet, the students will have a template that will help them record vital information. This will enable the students to arrive the next day in class armed with the knowledge they need for the hands-on lab experience. Students and parents can view the lesson together and pause or rewind if they don't understand the concept. The students can record any questions they have and get clarification the next day in class. Any student who did not view the video previously can do so in class the next day and will have to make up the lab after school. Accommodations will be made for any student without internet access at home.

This concept will increase more efficient use of lab time and enhance the learning experience. It is also a concept that we believe will gain momentum with other teachers at PSMS. We encourage teachers to be risk takers and support their efforts to utilize technology as part of their instruction. This is a perfect example of innovation and professional improvement.

Literacy in Action at South Middle

Teachers at Plymouth South Middle School met Wednesday this week during in-service as Part 3 of this year's Literacy Program. The focus this year is on writing, especially within the content areas. During the in-service meeting, teachers shared a subject-specific writing assignment with their colleagues and brought student work examples. Using an assessment protocol, the teachers were able to view samples that were considered "exemplary", "satisfactory" and "needs improvement". The teachers made observations, shared comments and asked questions about the purpose of the assignment and whether the students demonstrated learning effectively. The purpose of the in-service was to begin to examine how student work can help improve instruction and student learning. The feedback was very positive and the teachers felt that this was a worthwhile session.

The Literacy Support Team (LST) has worked vary hard this year to implement the goals of the district-wide literacy program. Thank you to the following individuals who serve on the LST and are viewed as teacher leaders in the building:

  • Sheldon Daly, Special Education Dept. Head
  • Alexandra Grundt, Library Media Specialist
  • Amanda Hough, Technology Education
  • Mary Lynn Mathews, Reading Specialist
  • Virginia Marconi, Housemaster
  • Kerri Miller, ELA
  • Karen Mitchell, Reading Specialist

Guidance Department News

2012-13 Course Selection Process
The course selection process for current grade 8-11 students is underway. The steps for selecting courses are fairly simple. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child's guidance counselor.

Counselors have presented and distributed the Program of Study booklets  to students in groups.
Core academic subject teachers have inputted their core course recommendations for their students as well.

Counselors are now meeting individually with students (up through early April) to review the student's course selections and the teacher course recommendations. The counselor and student complete the Course Request Sheet together, including course numbers, names, levels, and credits. Students are expected to be fully scheduled into 35 credits. Please note that students do not always get their first choice of electives. Priority is given by grade level, with seniors first. Every attempt will be made to find a related elective. Students should indicate alternate course choices on the  form.

The form then goes home for  parental review and approval. If your student is considering taking a different course level from the teacher's recommendation, we recommend that the student discuss it with the parent and then to contact the teacher in order to get his or her perspective. If the student  still wants to change the level then the parents need to complete a Course Override Form (available through the guidance counselor).
Return the completed Course Request Sheet (signed by student and parent) to the Guidance Department.

In June, before the end of the school year, students will receive a confirmation sheet of the courses they have requested which will include course titles, number of credits and and course level.  Final schedules with teacher and period assignments are handed out on the first day of school.

Please contact your child's guidance counselor if you have any questions.
