Hedge Elementary School News
Hedge Elementary School Wellness Program Hedge Elementary School is taking the lead for student health by participating in a nationwide wellness initiative called Fuel Up to Play 60. The initiative, sponsored locally by New England Dairy & Food Council (NEDFC) and the New England Patriots, is an effort to curb rising obesity rates by encouraging students to eat more nutrient-rich foods and be active for sixty minutes each day. As part of the Fuel Up to Play 60 program, Hedge School is celebrating "National School Breakfast Week" during the week of March 5 -9. "When students eat breakfast at school, they get a balanced meal that helps them to be more focused and ready to learn," stated Adam Blaisdell, Principal. "Our school makes every effort to help students succeed and offering a nutritious breakfast is an important part of their day." Encouraging students to adopt healthy, lifelong habits, such as eating breakfast, is a key component of the Fuel Up to Play 60 program. Offering nontraditional breakfast service significantly increases breakfast participation and is an excellent way to help children consume one of the recommended three servings of low-fat dairy a day and other food groups such as whole grains and fruits. Eating breakfast not only improves nutritional intake, but also yields better student test scores, increases concentration and attendance, and decreases disciplinary problems. Fueling up with a nutritious breakfast also gives students the energy they need to get up and play for sixty minutes a day to help build strong, healthy bodies. Fuel Up to Play 60 is a free, national youth-led program that allows students to work together to identify new and creative ways to offer more nutrient-rich foods, such as low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains and get 60 minutes of physical activity daily. Youth are encouraged to participate in physical activity they enjoy and are taught that the 60 minutes do not have to take place all at one time, but instead can be done in 10-15 minute sessions of activity throughout the day. The Fuel Up to Play 60 initiative is aimed at tackling the sedentary lifestyles and poor nutrition that have helped spur the current child health and nutrition crisis. Participating schools and youth get in-school promotional materials, healthy eating and physical activity strategies, and access to www.FuelUpToPlay60.com. Students can track their healthy behaviors and compete against other youth and schools to potentially win great prizes online. For more information about the important role of school breakfast and to learn more about Fuel Up to Play 60, visit www.NewEnglandDairyCouncil.org. |
Cold Spring Elementary News
The students in Miss Rosen's 4th Grade class have been doing a unit on Traditional Literature. They studied the folktale Stone Soup and read many versions of this story. They also explored the differences between the cultures among these stories by looking at the ingredients used in the soup and clothing worn by the characters. The 4th graders discussed the moral of "sharing" in these stories and celebrated this moral by having their own Stone Soup festival. Each student brought in an ingredient to add to the soup. They realized that everything really does come out better when everyone pitches in and shares what they have!

South Elementary School NewsSharing Stories of Kindness On February 14th, fourth graders went on a field trip to Plymouth South Middle School for a special day of reading by fifth graders who wrote, illustrated and published their own hardcover book. Students visited classrooms and gathered in small groups to listen to the original works. The fifth grade writing workshop was based on a fiction writing unit developed by Lucy Calkins of Columbia University. PSMS fifth grade teacher Mrs. Cindy Firth set themes of kindness and tolerance, which reinforced the middle school's commitment to create an environment based on those qualities. Authors worked closely with their homeroom teachers to revise and edit their stories and then publish them in a hardcover book form. "The fifth grade teachers emphasized the importance of having students remain focused on the moral as they worked on their books," Mrs. Firth notes. "During the special reading day, fourth graders were asked to guess the message of the stories they heard." "Our fourth graders were thrilled to spend the morning listening to these talented authors share their books," adds SES fourth grade teacher Mrs. Kathy McKnight. "They are already looking forward to writing books when they go to the middle school next fall."
Quite An Important Pair Valentine's Day week was a fitting time for a wedding, as kindergartners in Ms. Erin Shirley's morning and afternoon classes held a special "Q and U Wedding" to help remember that the two letters go together in words. In typical wedding fashion, students invited their families to the special event, held on February 16th. "The goal is for students to remember that when they write words that start with a "Q," it must be followed by a "U,"" says Ms. Shirley. "We learned that "U" goes after "Q," but "U" can also be alone." The day before the wedding, the class held a "Jack and Jill Shower," where the students wrapped items that start with "Qu" or "U," then wrote the words. The purpose was to provide a visual of words that start with both letters, and have the children determine the beginning letters. The students played special roles in planning for the celebration. Boys created "Q" bow ties and girls created "U" veils. On the big day, they walked in and promised that "Q" and "U" will go together at the beginning of words that start with "Q." They also brainstormed in front of the parents to come up with words that start with these letters. The celebration ended with students singing three songs to the parents: "Q's Alphafriend Song (Queenie Queen)," "Macarena Math," and "Count to 100 Everyday."

West Elementary School News
The Changing Faces at WES West welcomes Christina Friedman to the Team Christina has been teaching in the Plymouth School District for four years, and has taught music previously at Nathaniel Morton Elementary School and Plymouth North High School. She misses her high school students, but is very excited to be at West Elementary/South Elementary, as the younger grades are her favorite students to work with! Christina has a bachelor's degree in music education from Syracuse University and a master's degree in vocal performance from UNC Greensboro. She grew up in Sturbridge, and lives in Plymouth. Outside of teaching, she enjoys singing, playing guitar, teaching piano and voice lessons, reading (Harry Potter and The Hunger Games are her new favorite series), and traveling. With the retirement of the very talented Mrs. Ann Pizer, West Elementary is very happy to have Christina join the faculty.

Nathaniel Morton Elementary News
The third graders at Nathaniel Morton were given a broad science assignment- to simply create a solar system. The solar systems could be made out of any materials as long as they included the planets, the sun, and Earth's moon. The projects that filled the third grade classrooms were astonishing. No two projects were alike, as students let their creativity shine. Some projects were worn in the form of t-shirts, hats, and necklaces. Others hung as intricate mobiles. Numerous projects were even edible and later eaten by classmates! The students all worked very hard and what they learned about the solar system will surely stay with them throughout the years.
Chelsea shows off her solar system made of Christmas ornaments taken right from her tree!
Spencer poses with his hanging solar system.
Bridget wears her solar system hat.
Noelle hits a homerun with her cosmic baseball solar system!

Manomet Elementary News
Manomet Elementary hosted its First Annual Science Fair Night. It was an exciting cap to an amazing display of 5th grade science research projects. The fifth graders showed a variety of projects, some of which were: Fingerprints-Is There a Genetic Link?, Auditory vs. Visual Memory, The Spectrum of Light-Does it Affect Plant Growth?, Bug Training (so exciting!) and many more!
The additional exhibitions and experiments for the night were donated by families, teachers and friends. Exhibitions and experiments were stationed throughout the building. For example: studies in electricity were presented by the Shea family using their homemade Van de Graaff generator, static electricity experiments were presented by 1st graders Peter Renaud and Ben Yaeger. Mr. Campeau presented information on the spectrum of light. We were also delighted to have Mr. David Lemme showcase his knowledge of flight. He showed the effects of elevation in an air chamber. The children got the chance to pilot a plane with the flight simulator and check out other plane models. Microscopes were set out to show the difference in appearance of common salt and sugar.
Mrs. Hatch, Mrs. Cavicchi, Mrs. Manfredi and Mrs. Brandt worked tirelessly to help students create Oobleck (slime). Below are pictures of the Van deGraaf generator, children creating static electricity to power light bulbs and move objects. Some of the fifth grade projects are also shown.

Internet Safety
On February 13th, Assistant District Attorney Kristen Stone visited PSMS and did a presentation on "Internet Safety" for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. The presentation focused on the safe and appropriate use of social websites and other types of media. This included potential dangers and consequences associated with bullying and harassing behaviors and the misuse of technology. This presentation was part of our year-long commitment to preventing bullying and responsible use of the internet.
5th Grade Literacy Project This Tuesday, February 14th, fifth graders at Plymouth South Middle School shared a wonderful day celebrating literacy. As classroom teachers work on integrating the new reading and writing workshops into their classrooms, students have worked on a fictional writing piece promoting kindness and tolerance. On Tuesday, Valentine's Day, the weeks of hard work came to a conclusion as the fifth graders from PSMS read to the fourth graders from South Elementary School. The project began months ago as each fifth grader selected a stuffed animal for their main character. These animals were generously donated by parents and staff. Stories were then developed to teach a moral centered on the class themes of acceptance, compassion, friendship, kindness and responsibility. The children demonstrated great pride as they shared these stories Tuesday morning. The project has paid off in a multitude of ways as students demonstrate that "teaching" kindness in their stories gives them an even greater incentive to meet that expectation for themselves. A final celebration occurred this Friday as the entire fifth grade was treated to a breakfast provided by the school, a beautiful slide show presentation from Tuesday was viewed, and finally an opportunity for the fifth graders to share their final project among their classmates. While the hard cover books will be going home with the students, it is hoped that kindness and tolerance will continue to be demonstrated throughout the classrooms of PSMS for many days to come! Write Stuff Stars Congratulations to the following students who have been selected as Write Stuff Stars for Term 2: - Maxwell Sweeney, Grade 7
- Michael Whyte, Grade 7
- Makena Rivera-Concannon, Grade 7

PCIS News
On Tuesday, February 14th, Valentine's Day, 65 PCIS Falcon Pride students, accompanied by several PCIS teachers, visited 3 different nearby nursing homes: the Life Care Center of Plymouth and the Golden Living Center of Plymouth, both on Obery Street, and the Radius Health Care Center on South Street. All visits were very well received by the nursing home residents and the management of these facilities.
PCIS students used their many talents to sing songs and lead sing-alongs, play instruments, demonstrate yo-yo tricks, and tell jokes. Some students also visited residents in their rooms and helped some "pat the bunnies" (literally...one of the attending student's moms brought some baby bunnies along!) all the while dispensing cheer with cards, flowers, and smiles!
Both students and staff would like these visits to be a monthly event as there are so many Falcon Pride students who want to do this type of community service...it was a learning experience for everyone!
