Cold Spring Elementary School

The 5th grade students at Cold Spring School held

their Invention Convention on Thursday, June 16th. All the students had identified a problem to solve and designed their own invention to solve it.  As part of the process, the students maintained an Inventor's Log to document their progress and designed a prototype to present to their fellow inventors in order to get feedback on their project. Their final invention was presented to all the Cold Spring students and the Cold Spring family and friends.

Ryan McLoud demonstrates his "Brush and Go" invention.

Lucas Babini shows other students his "Night Rider."

Grace Foresteire talks to students about her invention "Night Slider" she designed with Rissa Sherwood.

Madelyn Gallagher and Kaley Smith answer questions about their invention "Blow Out".

West Elementary School

During the months of October through March the fourth and fifth grade classes at West Elementary School participated in the Massachusetts Children's Book Award program.  The Massachusetts Children's Book Award (MCBA) is the hallmark of the program that encourages the participants, Massachusetts students in grades four, five, and six, to read a variety of literary genres and use critical thinking skills to analyze and evaluate the nominated titles.

The students are exposed to diverse themes, plots, settings, and characters which enhance their experiences through literature.  The children read or listened to a minimum of five titles from a designated list and voted for their choices to receive the Award on a specified voting day in March. They joined students from 197 schools across the State who cast nearly 7,000 votes.  ELEVEN BIRTHDAYS by Wendy Mass received the majority of votes at West Elementary and won the MCBA based on the statewide vote count.

Inspired by the MCBA nominated title THREE CUPS OF TEA (Youth edition) by Greg Mortenson, the fourth and fifth grade students, along with the West School Community, became involved in a "Pennies for Peace" fundraiser during the month of March.  Two hundred dollars was raised and sent to the Central Asia Institute to help build schools to educate children and help them to break free from the poverty and ignorance that breeds discontent and anger in the world.

The culminating MCBA program activity consisted of a visit in May from nominated author, Eric Berlin, who met and shared a presentation with the fourth and fifth grades classes, autographed books, and had lunch with selected representatives from each class.  Mr. Berlin was nominated for his book THE POTATO CHIP PUZZLES.  Students and teachers alike were excited by his challenging, inspirational appearance. The author also visited the Plymouth Public Library, a supportive partner in the Project throughout the school year. This appearance opened up the experience to a broader audience of Plymouth students.

Funding for multiple copies of the MCBA nominated titles was provided by the West Elementary School PTA.  Funding for Eric Berlin's visits to West Elementary and the Plymouth Public Library was funded through a grant from the Plymouth Education Foundation.  Our thanks are extended to both organizations for their assistance.

Thanks, also, to Coordinator Ellen Driscoll, Principal Cindy Silva, Margaret McGrath (Plymouth Library), IMC Paraprofessionals Nancy Pecorella and Judy Coutts, volunteers Amy Ferrante and Kathy Olding , and fourth and fifth grade teachers Kyra Gratton, Katie Keeley, Doug Ozelius, Sue Ellenberger, Larissa Jamali, and Ellen O'Brien for their help and support.

PCIS Interscholastic Athletics

Spring 2011

The 2010-2011 athletic year ended with another successful season of interscholastic sports.  The Spring season highlights included a 7-1 record by the PCIS girl's softball team- their forth consecutive year with only one loss.  Additionally, the girl's and boy's lacrosse programs increased in size with a combined forty participating athletes.  In the end the additional involvement by PCIS lacrosse players resulted in the school's historic first victory against Falmouth Academy.  Both lacrosse teams met successes and ended the season with victories.  On the track, PCIS was represented by approximately sixty student-athletes.  The track and field team recorded victories against Riverview, Mattacheese, and Mashpee.  Congratulations to all Spring athletes!  Also, good luck to all 8th grade athletes headed for high school competition!

The 2011-2012 interscholastic athletic seasons begins in September.  Students should look for information about Fall sports including sign-up sheets for boy's and girl's soccer, field hockey, and cross country.  Information about PCIS interscholastic athletics can be located on the athletic board in the PCIS cafeteria, or by visiting www.plymouth.k12.ma.us.

For more information regarding PCIS athletics please contact Drew Sorensen at asorensen@plymouth.k12.ma.us.  Have a safe and happy summer!
