Miss Ready's 2nd grade class put on a puppet show called "The Kingdom of Self Esteem." The puppet show promoted self esteem and taught students how to make their classroom a lovable place. The show reinforced the characteristics students need to be a good person in their classroom, in their school, and in their community. There were 22 puppets and each puppet taught the audience about a different personality trait. The audience participated by yelling out the trait of each puppet: I am lovable! I am capable! I love to learn! I take care of the world around me! I am special and unique! and many more. The puppet show is based on the book The Loveables in the Kingdom of Self Esteem by Diane Loomans.

Cold Spring Fourth Grade

The end of the year is bringing a lot of excitement for Cold Spring fourth graders. The students have been working hard at a "Biography in a Box" project and  look forward to sharing  it with their parents next week.

Also coming up is a wonderful trip into Boston to see the State House, visit with the State President Therese Murray, and ride on the Swan Boats. This trip will give the students a nice combination of seeing what they've been studying in action and fun!

Students in Mrs. Egan's 4th grade class have been learning about the genre of biographies.  They have been reading biographies about famous people in history during Literature Circle groups, and also learning how to take notes and put together a well-written summary/report.  As a culminating assignment for this biography unit, students were assigned a "Biography in a Bag" project.  For this project students read a biography book of their choice, wrote a report, completed a timeline, decorated a shopping bag, and filled the bag with items representing their famous person.  They then presented their projects for their teachers and classmates, and also shared their work with family and friends during a "Biography in a Bag" Display Day.

PCIS Falcon Pride sponsors a Birdhouse Breakfast

This past Thursday, members of the PCIS Falcon Pride Relay for Life team prepared a special breakfast for the PCIS staff called the "Birdhouse Breakfast."  Falcon Pride members planned, organized, and served breakfast.  In addition, the group raised money for cancer research through the American Cancer Society by providing staff members with the opportunity to buy birdhouses made by students in one of their elective classes.

The birdhouses were constructed in Tech. Ed. classes under the instruction of PCIS Tech. Ed. teacher Doug Godfrey, and then donated to the Falcon Pride Club to be used for the fundraiser.  Unfinished birdhouses were sold for $10.00 apiece, and painted birdhouses were sold for $20.00.  By the end of the breakfast, the birdhouse fundraiser had netted a profit of $377.00.  Among the most sought after birdhouses were the three designed by 8th grade Apollo student Liz Sheldon.  Birdhouse designs included a Boston Bruins theme, a contemporary art theme, and a prairie theme.

With the assistance of club co-advisors Judy Maccaferri and Mark Kelleher, the group has also devised a contest whereby staff and students can paint, stain, or decorate a birdhouse in any way they choose and enter it to be judged in various categories.  The overall winner will receive a $25.00 prize, and the contest deadline is next Thursday, June 16th.  8th graders Maria D'Ambrosio, relay team captain, Shawn Westcott, a Relay for Life fundraising leader, and Caleb Jesse, Falcon Pride president, also took the time to thank the PCIS staff for their support of the club's activities all year long.

PCIS Students win award, and make changes to PCIS cafeteria

For the 3rd consecutive year PCIS History teacher Mike Martin and 8th grade students from Ranger won the Project Citizen State Showcase.  Project Citizen is a federally funded and organized civic education program whereby students are urged to identify a "problem" in their local community and present a public policy solution.  Mr. Martin's students won "Best Overall Portfolio" for their project, the highest honor, with their analysis of school cafeteria serving trays.

Students from A period Civics reviewed the affects, costs, and effectiveness of Styrofoam trays at the PCIS lunches.  After extensive research, the students decided to try and replace the Styrofoam plates with hard plastic compartmentalized trays.

As part of their project, students interviewed Patrick VanCott, Food Service Director for Plymouth Public Schools.  In the end, VanCott considered the student's research valuable and instituted the change shortly thereafter.  VanCott used the students work and determined hard plastic trays to be a more cost efficient way for students to carry their lunches.  This subtle change to the lunch environment has been present the past two weeks.

Madison Braz and Nicholas Trainor recently attended the Massachusetts Hugh O'Brian Youth (MA HOBY) Leadership Seminar. Trainor and Braz joined 225 other young leaders representing 164 high schools from throughout MA, May 27-29 at the Bentley University in Waltham, MA. Representing Plymouth South High School, Madison is the daughter of Michelle and James Braz; Nicholas is the son of Christine LaPierre.  Plymouth South High School's Student Council was local HOBY sponsor.   HOBY Leadership Seminars bring together a select group of high school sophomores to interact with renowned speakers and to participate in activities to learn leadership skills and ways to get involved in community service. The goal is to provide the youths a stimulating forum for broadening their understanding of their leadership potential and quest for self-development.  HOBY leaders are also challenged to return to their communities to perform at least 100 hours of community service within 12 months following the Seminar.

Plymouth South High School Student Council members under the direction of Ms. Ann Wolf received a letter of appreciation from Project Bread for their participation in the Walk for Hunger held on May 1st of this year.  With over 42,000 walkers and 2,000 volunteers, thousands of hungry people in Massachusetts receive assistance through food programs.  Their caring and support was truly appreciated providing hungry people the most basic necessity - food.
