Manomet Elementary School

The 3rd grade students in Mrs. Jen Kenny's, Mrs. Kathryn Shaw's and Mrs. Katie Strout's classrooms were assigned a biography project where they had to select a famous, historical person to research.  They were to research as much about this person as they could and then write about what they found out in a research paper.  The students were then to assume the role of the person they researched and dress in the appropriate clothing of the day.  Imagination was encouraged.  The parents of these 3rd graders were then invited to come to school to 'meet' some famous people!  They were encouraged to ask questions of the characters as well.  There was a wonderful turnout and everybody learned something new about famous historical figures!

Children in both Laurie Galop's second grade classroom at Manomet Elementary School and Debra Bostwick's second grade classroom at West Elementary School, worked throughout this school year to collect items for their Community Service Learning Project. Laurie Galop and Debra Bostwick created this program together to help the students understand that they do not have to wait until adulthood to make a difference in someone's life.   Each month the students collected items which were then given to the Taskforce for the Homeless.  The students enjoyed guest readers each month and designed graphs and charts to keep track of the items they had collected.  After working on this project from both locations, the students got together recently to meet and share what had transpired throughout their 9 months of giving!

Guest readers included Mrs. Kathy Babini, Dr. Lisa White, Mrs.Linda Coffey, Mr. Chris Campbell, Mr. Patrick Fraine and Mrs. Connie Melahouras.

Miss Ready's and Mrs. Terranova's 2nd grade classes from Cold Spring went to the planetarium at PCIS last week to conclude their science unit on space. The students asked wonderful questions and the adults enjoyed sitting and looking at the stars as well!

Some notable comments were:

"I thought it was fun because we learned about the stars." -Abigail Smith

"I liked how they showed us the stars and connected them to show constellations!"

-Tristan Gallagher

"It was pretty cool because it made the sky on a dome and the constellations, too."

-Andrew Melville

"You get to see the constellations. I hadn't seen the Big Dipper and Little Dipper, but now I have!"

The classes will be off to Briarwood Marine Science Center next week. There they will discover marine life and investigate different habitats as they hike in the marshes and beaches.
