Indian Brook Elementary School
As part of a Service Learning Project, Mrs. Loftus's Indian Brook fourth grade class of 26 have been pen pals with our senior friends at the Plymouth Council on Aging. The class has been corresponding with our community seniors over the past year through letters, cards, videos and more. A June 8th bus trip has been scheduled to bring the class to the Council on Aging facility in Cordage Park to meet their pen pals in person and join their new friends in a Zumba Dance Class, board games, and lunch prior to returning to school. What a wonderful way to bring our community together and celebrate the end of the year with our new friends from the Council!

Conni DiLego (Director of Plymouth Elder Affairs) and Allison Payne (Activities Coordinator at COA) visited the Indian Brook students to plan the class trip to the Plymouth Council on Aging.

Cold Spring Elementary School
The third graders in Cold Spring School have been very busy lately. This past week they finished short stories and poems that will be sent away and professionally bound. The students worked so hard on these, and they and their families will be able to keep and share them for many, many years!
In addition, having just finished math MCAS, the students are now turning their attention toward some fun activities! We are busy getting ready for the school writing celebration taking place on May 26 and 27th, but are also looking forward to an exciting trip to the Museum of Science in Boston. Students will see displays depicting so many scientific concepts that they have learned this year. They will also see an Omni show! What a great end to a great year!

PCIS News
Service learning projects and community service in full swing at PCIS
PCIS teachers Kate Varney and Drew Sorensen have been working with two groups of PCIS students on service learning projects, which helps students acquire positive civic identities.
PCIS 8th Grade Mercury students have been participating in service learning projects as part of the History curriculum's "Teaching Tolerance" unit. "Our focal point has been immigration from both a historical and contemporary point of view," explained History teacher Kate Varney. All projects were student generated and driven with the focus on the needs of immigrants in the Plymouth community.
"One of the more successful projects has seen students collect backpacks, pens, pencils, paper, and other various school supplies based upon the needs of immigrants in the community." Varney continued. Additionally, other student driven projects includes a guide/map to Plymouth that highlights hospitals, schools, popular stores, and restaurants, a "Welcome to PCIS" video, and a photo story booklet about PCIS.
On the athletic field the PCIS softball team completed their annual community service project. This year the members of the school's 7th and 8th grade team collected, organized, packaged, and shipped seven boxes of gentle used sports equipment to a charitable organization. The majority of the boxes were filled with old Plymouth uniforms previously worn by student-athletes of the PCIS interscholastic program. The donations are being shipped to Sports Gift, a non-profit organization in California. Sports Gift then distributes the goods to poor nations in need of sports equipment.

PCIS Lacrosse Program On The Rise. Boys' Lacrosse gets school's historic first victory!
The interscholastic lacrosse program at PCIS is only in its second season but already successes are mounting. This past week the boys' team won the first game in the history of their young program, defeating Falmouth Academy 5-3. Mercury 8th grader Travis Hunt recorded the win in net and PCIS got goals from Ranger's Sean Murphy and Mercury's Noah Cully. Currently the boys' team has a record of 1-3 and the lady falcons are 1-2
Both the girls' and boys' teams have seen their participation numbers double from 2010 to 2011. The increase in numbers can be partially credited to Plymouth Rock Lacrosse, the town's youth program which has provided a great deal of support to the school's program. PNHS 2008 graduate Chris Freeland coaches the PCIS boys' team and the girls' team is coached by John Sawyer, a physical education teacher in Marshfield.

Plymouth South High School News
Panther TV wins All New England Award For the second year in a row (in only its two-year old program) Plymouth South's Panther TV last week was given the "All New England Award" for being the Best High School Broadcast News Program in New England by the New England Scholastic Press Association at an awards ceremony at Boston University. Panther TV also won 5 of 7 individual awards given in the broadcasting area of the competition. "It's truly an amazing accomplishment for these students," said Erik Walker, an English and Journalism teacher and co-teacher of Panther-TV. Walker's crew of fourteen students produce the school's twenty-five minute news broadcast, which airs in the school, online, and on local television channels. Plymouth South Principal Patricia Fry said, "The Professionalism of the Panther-TV program, due to the hard work of the staff and students, is remarkable. Their energy, work ethic, and attention to detail are a few of the reasons they are a two-time New England champion! Great job to all," Fry said. Walker noted it's more than about awards, though. "I'm even more proud of all the hard work they've put in to creating a wonderful broadcast. They've not just covered typical stories, but serious stories about school life and community life," Walker said. Some of the serious stories Panther TV has covered this year include the impact of Autism on families, a history of Cordage Park, how serious allergies impact students in a school-setting, immigration, and self-esteem awareness. "Seeing the program evolve over the past year has been an incredible experience," said Daniel Sherrill, a Graphics Arts Teacher and co-teacher of Panther TV. "The students outdid themselves with each new episode. I am extremely proud to be a part of such an outstanding program," Sherrill said. "It's extraordinary to have won best in New England two years in a row. I'm proud of everyone on our news team," Walter Cicchetti, a senior and the show's producer, said. In addition to winning the All New England award for the second straight year, Panther TV also won five of the seven individual broadcast journalism awards given by the New England Scholastic Press Association. Senior Nikki Bevans won an award for outstanding news coverage for her report on freshmen outdoor education and teambuilding. Seniors Samantha Fanning, Olivia Savage, and Junior Ann DeLoid won an award for outstanding news coverage for an on-location news story they did at Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty that discussed the history of Immigration and how it still impacts America today. Senior Walter Cicchetti won an award for outstanding feature story for his coverage of Thanksgiving in America's hometown. Walter Cicchetti also won an award with Haley Wentworth and Dominique DeCola for their public service story "Save your Deer Life." Amber Tanderes and Jenn Weatherhead won an award for outstanding public service campaign for an anti-bullying PSA entitled "Be a Hero."
