Meet Kelly Learning and Hannah McBride

Hannah McBride, a third grader at West Elementary School, nominated her teacher, Kelly Learning, to be featured in this week's Old Colony Memorial!  Hannah nominated Ms. Learning for the following reasons, "I think Miss Learning is great! I like MCAS Fun Fridays! On those days, we read, answer questions and do open response questions. I really like how she has learning centers and she invites our parents in. Miss Learning has fun math centers, too. We have Bus Spots and we get to read with our friends. We have a Feelings Board so we can share our feelings. When we have Writing Workshop, Miss Learning tells us stories about her life. We earn pennies and buttons when we do good things. I think Miss Learning is very sweet and conscientious!"

Ms. Learning said that she enjoys the following aspects of teaching: "What I enjoy the most about teaching is my students. Each and every single one of them is special and has something different and unique to offer the class. When my students find success, I am successful. The possibilities are endless for my students and I hope they leave my class knowing they can do anything they choose as long as they are willing to work hard for it and never give up."

Congratulations to Hannah McBride and Kelly Learning!

Manomet Elementary News

Mrs. Kathryn Shaw's third grade class at Manomet is learning about the water cycle in science.  The students have worked in small groups to make terrariums, planting seeds in recycled plastic domed containers.  Every two days they make written observations about the condensation that forms on the lids of the containers as well as the sprouting of the seeds.  The students concluded that the moisture evaporates from the soil, condenses on the lid, and drips back down to the soil, creating a mini-water cycle.

They have also made observations about the cups of water that they have allowed to sit in various areas of the classroom.  They have concluded that the water levels differ depending on the amount of heat exposure the water receives; the more heat, the more rapid rate of evaporation.

Lastly, the students created a paper water cycle loop showing the transport of water on the water cycle.  Uses of water and its importance were discussed as they followed the route of the water from mountain streams to lakes and rivers and eventually back to the ocean.  Recreational and industrial uses of water were explored as well as the importance of conservation.  They were surprised to learn that only 1% of all of the earth's water is fresh water that is not frozen!
