Superintendent Gary Maestas will go for the ride of his life!
Dr. Gary Maestas plans to raise money for Plymouth students by riding a bicycle from Washington, DC, to Plymouth, MA! Through this incredible journey, now named "DreamRide," Dr. Maestas' goal is to raise $100,000 in donations for the Plymouth Education Foundation, the premier, non-profit organization established to support and enhance the education of the students and citizens of the Town of Plymouth.
Beginning June 6, Dr. Maestas, accompanied by a DreamRide Team comprised of students, teachers and a nurse, will bike approximately 600 miles from DC to Plymouth over a seven-day period. DreamRide plans to raise money via sponsorships.
There are many valuable lessons to be learned from this journey. "Sure, the goal is to raise money, specifically $100,000, but we're just as interested in setting an example for students," said Maestas. "When faced with a problem or challenge, I want students to learn to think outside the box."
Dr. Maestas will record daily video reports/blogs from the road. In addition, his progress will be recorded via GPS online as will his heart rate and other vitals. The opportunities for the students of Plymouth to learn from this ride span so many different subjects:
· Health and Wellness - How to train, eat and prepare physically and mentally for a physical challenge.
· Math - Problem solving, charting and estimating Dr. Maestas' progress.
· Social Studies - Historical and geographical aspects of sites visited along the route.
· Science - Weather, mechanics of bicycle, drag coefficients
· English Language Arts - Literacy
· Community involvement - How getting involved with your community can help students and their families accomplish incredible things.
The DreamRide is looking for sponsors to underwrite the expenses associated with the 7-day tripe. Serious Cycles of Manomet has donated a SPECIALIZED bike for the ride. In addition, Serious Cycles Owner Seth Lawrence is training two students as repair technicians for the ride. Other sponsors to date include Jordan Hospital, First Student Bus Company, and the Plymouth and Brockton Street Railway Company.
"The DreamRide is about much more than 'Dr. Maestas' getting on a bicycle and hopefully getting himself in good enough condition not to fall apart somewhere in New Jersey," said Maestas. "It's about people caring about the education our children are receiving and wanting something better."
For complete information on the DreamRide, including sponsorship and volunteer information, please visit www.dreamride.us or contact Mrs. Nicole Manfredi, DreamRide Director at (781) 831-0731 or nsmanfredi@aol.com.

Indian Brook Elementary News
The students at Indian Brook Elementary School were captivated and enriched by an original production, Diamonds and Toads, by Worcester Opera Works on Friday, January 28, 2011. Diamonds and Toads is based on the French fairytale by Perrault and tells the tale of two sisters. They learn, by way of a Fairy, the value of kind speech and empathy. This tale has a valuable lesson and is also an excellent introduction to the music of Mozart.
The cast features Sandy Fritze as the Fairy, Erin Conley as Rose and Elaine Crane as Grace, with storybook sets and costumes. The production gave its first performance on January 30, 2009 in Worcester and is now booking performances in schools and communities throughout Massachusetts and other New England states. For more information, go to: http://www.worcesteroperaworks.com/Diamonds_and_Toads.htm
Worcester Opera Works is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization whose two-fold mission includes opera performance and education. The company produces main stage opera and concerts, as well as touring opera for students. WOW strives to provide high quality, entertaining operatic productions to the audiences of Central MA, while at the same time providing valuable performing opportunities to the area's wealth of local, professionally-trained singers.
This performance was made possible through the fundraising efforts of the Indian Brook PTA.

Math Mosaics
The students in the classrooms of 5th grade teachers Mrs. Jeannine Hatch and Mr. Gary Anderson recently completed a take home project for Math. To complement the math skills studied in Unit 5 of Everyday Math, boys and girls were asked to create a mosaic that incorporated several different objects, totaling 100 items all together. The objects, the design, and the presentation were all left up to the individual student. They then had to make a chart which listed the fraction, decimal, and percent that each different object represented in the mosaic.
The students created some very unique and impressive mosaics, employing a wide variety of materials. Great job 5th graders!

Plymouth South High School has achieved the Gold Medal status five consecutive years and is the only school store in the state to do so. The School-Based Enterprise (SBE) at Plymouth South High School nationwide was among the 42 school stores that achieved Gold Level Certification and will be recognized at DECA's International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida. The students that worked on the Certification were Emma Ryan, Ashley Buker, and Chelsea Falkenstein. School-based Enterprises are effective educational tools in helping to prepare students for the transition from school to work or college. For many students, they provide the first work experience; for others, they provide an opportunity to build management, supervision, and leadership skills. While some in the education community have only recently discovered the value of school-based enterprises, marketing educators and DECA advisors have used them as a powerful learning lab for more than four decades. DECA's School-based Enterprise (SBE) Certification Program was developed to provide recognition for outstanding achievement by school-based enterprises and to motivate SBEs to strive for excellence and to grow. Students in Ms. Shaver's US II Honors, Mr. Walker's American Literature Honors and Mrs. Steven's AP History classes will be traveling to New York City on Friday, March 4th to visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The purpose of this trip is to help bring history to life. Reading about immigration can be powerful, but experiencing it first hand will be even more influential. |

South Elementary School News
Red Robin Visits South Elementary School It's Winter Warm-up time at South Elementary School. During these snowy and cold days, what better way can a student spend the day? The staff challenged students, grades 1-4, to read ten books in 5 weeks. Students were given a book log to record their books as they read. For each ten books read, students will receive a free book (compliments of South Elementary's PTA). Our fourth graders could earn an extra bonus for their first ten books - a free Kid's Meal at Red Robin. Red heard about all the reading excitement at South Elementary and decided that she would have to cheer on all the students who were working so hard to fill out their book logs. On Friday, January 28th, Red joined students at lunch time. She and her Red Robin manager encouraged our students to keep reading and gave students high fives for all of their hard work. South Elementary is most grateful to Red and Red Robin for helping to make reading fun for our students.
