PCIS News

On February 5, 2011, members of the PCIS band, chorus, and strings are heading to Nichols Middle School in Middleboro, MA to audition for the Jr. SEMSBA festival.  PCIS students have been preparing an audition piece as part of their daily music curriculum.  If selected by a panel of judges, PCIS will have the honor of representing Plymouth Public Schools at the SEMSBA festival in May.  There are 70 schools represented in the Southeast Massachusetts Bandmasters Association and hundreds of students auditioning.  Results of the judging and selection process should be available to PCIS by Tuesday, February 8, 2011.

On Friday, February 11, 2011, the Little Theater will be transported back in time to the late 18th century.  PCIS parents and friends will see John and Abigail Adams come to life to share their most personal letters.  The PCIS History Club is sponsoring a special Valentine's performance of Love Letters: The Intimate Correspondence of John and Abigail Adams.  Through their letters, John and Abigail reveal their teasing humor, their homely pleasure in their children and their farm, their deepest hopes for their nation, and their undying love and respect for one another.  The presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the PCIS Little Theater and will be followed by a Valentine's reception in the PCIS library.  Tickets are on sale for $12 per person or $20 per couple, and are available in the PCIS office.  A ticket order form will be sent home.  Ticket sales will benefit the PCIS History Club.

Manomet Elementary News

Manomet's Elementary's 3rd graders recently created dioramas of various ecosystems. They have been learning how plants and animals live in the environment. The goals of this project were to build responsibility, conduct research, collect information, and learn note-taking skills. Each third grade student in the classrooms of Mrs. Jen Kenny, Mrs. Kathryn Shaw and Mrs. Kate Strout, presented their projects to parents and friends.

MATHLETES BEGIN THEIR WORKOUTS

The following eight PSMS students will be competing at the Regional Mathlete Competition at PCIS this Monday, February 7th : Andrew Shortall (Grade 7), Veronica Holmes (Grade 7), Jack Hennessy (Grade 8), Max Gonye (Grade 7), T.J. Johnson (Grade 7), Ashley Riley (Grade 8), Greg Pappas (Grade 7), and Andrew Strout (Grade 8). The regional competition includes 20 different public and private schools from southeastern Massachusetts. Students are competing for the opportunity to participate in the State Competition at Wentworth Institute of Technology in March.

BLOGGING AT PSMS

Fifth and sixth grade students have been busy participating in our MA Book Awards Program and are preparing to vote on their favorite book in March. Back in January, Ms. Grundt, our Library/Media Specialist, instructed classes on how to write book reviews and the purpose they serve (learning how to really think about what one is reading and to develop and support one's opinion of the book).  With the idea that students could write reviews of the awards book and post them on our library blog, Mrs. Jones's Grade 5 class recently posted their reviews, and whether or not they liked the book.  They did a great job expressing their opinions.  Please read the students' reviews by visiting the PSMS website and clicking on the Library link on the right hand side.

Early Childhood Fair

Over 350 people attended the 14th annual Early Childhood Fair last Saturday at Plymouth South Middle School hosted by the Plymouth Family Network. This year's theme was "Leap Into Literacy."  Early Childhood Providers and local agencies set up informational tables in the cafeteria and offered a variety of developmental appropriate activities for the young children. Mt. Pleasant Preschool Parent Advisory Council provided refreshments. The Athletic Republic Little Athletes program offered free sports activities in the gym while the Middle Street School of Music entertained families with music in the main hall.

FEATURE MY TEACHER!

The OCM is running a program called FEATURE MY TEACHER. What a great way to recognize the hard working, dedicated professionals in our building that are committed to ensuring that you get the best education. The goal of this program is to introduce local teachers to the wider community.

Choose a teacher that has made a big impact on your education. Preferably someone that you are studying with now, but it can be a teacher still in the Plymouth school system that you have had in the past. Recognize that teacher, they deserve it!

All you have to do is pick up a form in the library or computer lab, see your teacher to have him/her fill out the top portion; you fill out the bottom, and then see Mrs. Latosek so she can take a picture of the two of you together. All entries will then be submitted to the OCM.
