Nathaniel Morton Elementary News

Nathaniel Morton Elementary staff members recently participated in a Holiday Bake-Off.  This is a yearly event for the elementary school.  Bakers designate a charity of choice, and all entry and tasting fees go to the charity designated by the winning baker.

This year, the winning baker was Grade Four Teacher, Michael Cleary.  Mr. Cleary designated the Jimmy Fund as his charity of choice.  The money earned from the Bake-Off, $600, will be sent to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Brookline, Massachusetts.  A check for the amount will be sent in Mr. Cleary's honor to help further the work of the Jimmy Fund towards eliminating childhood cancer.

Congratulations to all who participated and many thanks!  A special thank you goes to Mr. Cleary for a job well done!

Plymouth schools adopt anti-bullying policy

School Superintendent Gary Maestas and Police Chief Michael Botieri formalized an agreement last week, signing a memorandum of understanding that details how police will response to complaints of bullying in local schools. The agreement extends onto buses and into the community as well, providing protections anywhere local students happen to be.

The agreement even extends into cyberspace, allowing school officials, as well as police, to intercede if students become victims of online bullying.

Assistant Superintendent Christopher Campbell said the memorandum of understanding is based on an agreement already in place between police and school officials in Lexington. The memorandum "acts as a blueprint to help enhance our capability to response to bullying and cyberbullying," he said.

The policy sets out a step-by-step response for school officials once they become aware of bullying.

Staff must immediately report the behavior to their administrator. The administration will take necessary precautions to prevent more bullying and notify the parents or guardians of the target and the aggressor.

If necessary, administrators will call police in to investigate.

PCIS News

PCIS is proud to highlight three experiences that provide positive district and school leadership and enhance student social and emotional growth and civic responsibility.

On Friday, January 14, 2011, PCIS chorus teachers, Sharon Francer and Jess Vaitkus, will take 90 PCIS chorus students to sing the National Anthem at the Providence Bruins game.  This annual event is a highlight of the chorus academic experience and showcases some of the musical talents within our school.

Additionally, the two teachers have begun auditions for the production of the annual school play.  With tremendous support from the Plymouth community, and another crop of theater stars, the teachers will present Mulan Jr., the story of a young girl who secretly joins the Imperial army.  The play is slated to be performed this spring at Plymouth North High School.

On Thursday, January 13, 2011, the PNHS wrestling team and the PCIS wrestling team collaborated to run a successful middle school wrestling meet at PCIS.  The North High School wrestlers were instrumental in the success of the event.  They were positive role models as they instructed the younger wrestlers, and maintained a professional role as they refereed the meet.  Together, the teams continue to build a strong relationship between PNHS and PCIS athletics.  A second meet is scheduled for January 27, 2011, against Braintree, Marshfield and Silver Lake schools.
