South Elementary News
An Annual Tradition
On Monday, November 22nd, twenty-five members of the Plymouth South High School football team arrived at South Elementary School at noon to take part in an annual tradition. Within a short period of time the football players fanned out to all of South Elementary School's first and third grade classrooms to read aloud to students. Students read about the first Thanksgiving, about the Pilgrims and about football. The younger students, who were in awe of the tall young men who read aloud, had the opportunity to ask them questions about playing sports and attending classes in high school. This event was a win-win for the big kids and the little kids.
Upgrades to the SES Playground
South Elementary School students arrived on Monday, November 29th excited to see trucks at work on the Rainbow Playspace. The arrival of the trucks and work crew signaled that the long-awaited upgrades to the site were about to happen. Workers from Forte Landscaping and O'Brien and Sons installed a Vertical Ascent, a Summit Climber, a Wiggle Ladder a Sound Chimes Panel and a free-standing set of Bongo Drums. The workers also upgraded the area around the swings.
South Elementary School's students and staff are most grateful to the members of the SES PTA for raising the funds to support the improvements. The PTA is grateful for the support from the school's parent and business communities.

PNHS Robotics
The PNHS \PSHS Robotics Season Starts
This marks the beginning of the 17th year of the Plymouth Robotics Program. This program exists through the generosity of a yearly grant from Entergy Corporation/ Pilgrim Nuclear Station and the effort of the student competitors.
The first of two planned regional competitions will take place Saturday at the Solomon Mall in Marlborough Ma. This competition is being hosted by the Assebet Valley Vocational Technical School under the direction of Bryant Laflamme. Assebet will be previewing a newly constructed combat robot arena.
The Assabet arena is modeled after the original 12' octagonal arena designed and built by students enrolled in the PNHS engineering program.
The PNHS arena served as the official arena for 3 national combat robot events held in Kansas City MO, 2010, and Miami Fla. 2008-2009. This arena was the catalyst for the creation of a regional combat robot league.
As a result of this grass roots initiative a set of "Official" arena plans have been created and will be distributed nationwide through the SolidWorks Education webstite.
15 of more than 25 students who worked on the design and construction of this arena are now enrolled in undergraduate engineering studies at competitive colleges and universities. These include Dartmouth College, Cornell, WPI, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Wentworth and others.
Two PNHS robots are currently under construction and a third design is being developed for the 2011 games. The PNHS Robots Anarchy Team of Derrick Salvucci, Dan O'Rourke and Cam O'Dwyer, is a redesign using existing robot DNA. PNHS Team Screwed Up consists of Nick Taormina, Jason Gardner, Frank Aguiar and Sean Serrilla.. These young engineers are working on a second attempt at a breakthrough design idea for a vertical spinner robot based on the 2001 PNHS robot, "Reactore" which was featured on the TV Show BattleBots Season 3. These robots are shown in the photos below.
Plymouth South high School under the direction of Mr. George Ayers is also fielding combat robot competitors for the Saturday games. PSHS is developing robot designs for future events. The PNHS and PSHS programs have enjoyed a cooperative and competitive engineering relationship for over 10 years. Each has earned their share of engineering excellence awards in an effort to provide challenging engineering experiences for the students of the Plymouth Community.

Season's Greetings!

Please bring your unwrapped gift to the library and see Mrs. Latosek. We will give you an ornament to write your name on which will help decorate our bare tree. Show your kindness and compassion, and let's fill that tree.
