PCIS News
PCIS Gemini Blue Team is stepping up!
The Gemini Blue Team teachers have invited students and families to join us as we walk to support our veterans in the town-wide Step Up for Veterans Walk at PSHS, November 11th from 11 am to 2 pm. Parents are responsible for dropping off and picking up their own children, but teachers will be at PSHS and hope you can join us. If we all just donate a dollar, think of what an impact that would make. Students are asked to wear red, white, and blue and join us for a team photo at 1:00!
In addition to the voluntary Step Up for Veterans Walk, the Blue Team will also be participating in a cross-curricular activity collecting data about veterans in our lives and how they have served or are currently serving, learning about the history of Veteran's Day, and sharing anecdotes and oral histories from local veterans. We want our student to realize that Veterans Day is more than just a day off.
PCIS Art Show with the Masters!
Mrs. Rioux's 8th grade first term students performed an Art Show with the Masters on Wednesday, November 3, 2010.
Students formed small groups at the beginning of the term and chose an artist of their choice. The groups studied the artist's work, wrote a biography, recreated a piece of the artist's work, and planned an art show to highlight their pieces. As a culmination, someone "became" the artist and dressed as the artist would have during that time period, and all participated in videotaped interviews in the Little Theater (with the assistance of the Monday afternoon TV Club!)
Claude Monet, Salvador Dali, Paul Klee, Henry Matisse, were just a few of the Masters who we had the opportunity to meet! Please join us at the end of next term here at PCIS to see which artists will be visiting then!

Governor Patrick Reminds Families that November is Massachusetts Family Literacy Month
State Officials Encourage Family Participation in Educational Activities
MALDEN - Friday, November 5, 2010 - Governor Deval Patrick has proclaimed November 2010 to be the state's 14th annual Family Literacy Month in celebration of the pivotal role that parents and family members play in the educational success of their children.
As in years past, Family Literacy Month will include activities across the state that will support and celebrate literacy, lifelong learning and family well-being. Local events will be sponsored by schools, libraries, adult literacy programs, early childhood programs and other community groups.
"One of the greatest gifts we can give our children as parents and as educators is a deep love of reading," said Governor Patrick. "During Family Literacy Month and throughout the year, we must focus on building the support students and families need to develop the ability to read and read well."
"Reading is the foundation on which an excellent education is built," said Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray. "I encourage all families to take out some extra time during this Family Literacy Month to read together."
Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester agreed. "Students who are engaged in rich reading and literacy activities from an early age will be more successful in school and will graduate college and career ready," said Chester. "As a parent, I know the importance of family members partnering with children to develop literacy skills. I encourage families to share their love of reading and learning with their children."
"Reading to my children has always been one of my favorite activities because I want to instill in them the deep respect and enthusiasm that I have for reading," said Education Secretary Paul Reville. "We owe it to our children to work with them every day to share the gift of literacy."
Planned events this weekend include:
November 5
Boston Children's Museum will welcome families for a special literacy month event on Friday, November 5 from 6-8:30 p.m. that will begin with a speaking program featuring Commissioner Chester and Secretary Reville. November 6
Cambridge will conduct their 14th annual citywide Cambridge Family Literacy fun day for all Cambridge children pre-K though grade 5 and their families at Cambridge City Hall from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
"Falmouth Reads - A Family Literacy Event" will be conducted at the Falmouth Public Library from 10 a.m. to noon.
November 7
The Westborough Public Library invites families with children ages 3-6 to enjoy Literacy & Laughter with Dora presented by Start U at 3 p.m.
Family Literacy Month is sponsored by the Massachusetts Family Literacy Consortium (MFLC) and its member agencies to encourage events during November as well as throughout the rest of the year. MFLC is a statewide initiative to forge effective partnerships among state agencies, community organizations, and other interested parties to expand and strengthen family literacy and support. More information about Step Up for Veterans
After the Veteran's Day parade residents are encouraged to show support for vets by walking laps around the school's outdoor track or indoor gymnasium and collecting donations for the effort. Proceeds will be used to help veterans in need with fuel assistance and food.
Social Studies Coordinator Kathy Babini said the fundraiser stems from service learning initiatives underway throughout the school system. Babini met with the town veterans agent as part of the project and saw an opportunity to expand the initiative to the community at large.
Several student organizations have already expressed interested in participating as teams. Babini said pledge sheets are available, but registration is not mandatory.
Rather, organizers hope people will walk in support of veterans and make a donation in their honor.
"It's timed for after the parade so those attending can stop by afterward," Babini said.
Step Up for Veterans will be held Thursday, Nov. 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Plymouth South High School, at 490 Long Pond Road. For more information, contact Kathy Babini at 508-830-4476.
