Plymouth Public Schools School Committee Meetings:

The next Plymouth School Committee is scheduled for April 12, 2010 at Plymouth Community Intermediate School. The meeting starts at 7:00 P.M.

PSHS STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN AVERY A. ASHDOWN CHEM EXAM
 
On Saturday, April 3rd, six students from Plymouth South High School traveled to Simmons College accompanied by chemistry teacher, Ann E. Wolf, for the NESACA Avery A. Ashdown High School Chemistry Examination.
 
Second year chemistry students participating in the New England Section of the national exam were: Aaron Creighton, Deidre Carlson, Kari Cannon, and Marc DeCoste.
 
First year chemistry students were: Natasha Karklin and Tom Addison.
 
The top five finalists are awarded money prizes; the top 20 gain the opportunity to move on to the Chemistry Olympiad - a chemistry week which takes place during the summer at the Air Force Academy in Colorado. Those finalists go on to the International Chemistry Conference in Tokyo.
PSHS STUDENTS WIN SILVER AND GOLD LATIN AWARDS
 
Fourteen students from Plymouth South High School received awards on the 2010 National Latin Exam. They competed with over 150,000 students from all fifty states and thirteen foreign countries. This year's winners included two gold medal and two silver medal recipients.
 
Casey Senechal and Sam Cheung received gold medal/summa cum laude awards. Silver medal/maxima cum laude awards went to Rebecca Laudermilk and Jackson McAdams. Magna cum laude winners included Eric McCue and Victoria Pisto. Cum laude certificates were earned by James MacNeil, Steven Swiniarski, Aaron Darbyshire, Brittany Shields, Charles Senechal, Madison Braz, Hannah Shepherd, and Ashleigh McKenna.
 
Congratulations to all of this year's winners on their outstanding effort and achievement.
PNHS Happenings:
 
Congratulations to Lauren Stanford, Student Council President, and the Student Council E Board for organizing the PNHS 2010 School Spirit Week celebrations. Team competitions in volleyball, waffle ball, kick ball, and dodge ball were held every afternoon in the gym during March 8th - March 12th. March 15th - March 19th students showed their spirit dressing up on Twin Day, Dress Like a Movie Character Day, Pajama Day, Dress Like an Animal Day, and Mismatch Day. Spirit Week culminated with the second annual Techno Dance.
 
Congratulations to the fourteen (14) students who competed at the South Shore Regional Science Fair held at Bridgewater State College on March 13th, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers Rachel Campbell, Tyler Green, Jessica Morgan, Hannah Conley, Christina Noyes, Cody Holmes, Alex Rozak, and Benjamin Waltuch are eligible to go on to the Massachusetts State Science and Engineering Fair. 
 
Congratulations to Dan Ahlstedt for his selection by the Atlantic Coast League to receive the 2010 Boston Bruins-MIAA Sportsmanship Award. The award is given annually by the Boston Bruins and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association to one individual from each league in the state who best exemplifies the highest standards of fair play and sportsmanship in high school hockey.
 
Mrs. Larracuente's twenty-eight (28) AP US History students went to the JFK library on March 25th to participate in a special program on developing strategies for answering the DBQ, document based question.  Students analyzed several primary sources documents from the Kennedy papers collection and videos and practiced applied DBQ strategies to the content of the civil rights movement of the early sixties.
 
Mrs. Lewison and forty (40) of her French II, III, and IV students performed a skit at the March 24th faculty meeting in preparation for their performance at the Annual Fete de la Francophonie at Milton High School on March 26th.  Students acted out the lyrics to the song, "Tout Doucement" by Canadian singer, Feist, as well as, watched area high school performances during this day of celebration of French culture and language.
 
The PNHS Vocal Point choir accompanied by Jonathan Richter, Director, participated in the Plymouth Philharmonic 2010 High School Consortium performance of Dona Nobis Pacem at Memorial Hall on March 27th. Joined by over 200 high school choral performers and the Plymouth Philharmonic, North's Vocal Point High School thrilled audiences with its interpretation of this renowned English-language choral/orchestral music.
 
Twelve (12) of Mrs. Harkins Visual and Digital Arts students went to the Golden Living Center to interview residents on March 27th. Students are incorporating film shots of the interviews into documentaries on historical subjects such as, the Great Depression, World War II, President John F. Kennedy's Assassination, and the Civil Rights movement.
The Winter Percussion participated in the NESBA Winter Percussion and Indoor Color Guard competition at Melrose High School on March 27th.
 
Mikaela Feroli and Douglas Maccaferri, School Committee Student Representatives, accompanied by Superintendent Maestas, School Committee Chair Burgess, and school committee members participated in the Massachusetts School Committee Day on the Hill at the Massachusetts State House on Tuesday, March 30th. During this event, Mikaela and Douglas received important information on the status of education by invited guest speaks Governor Duval Patrick, Senate Ways and Means Chair Steven Panagiotakos, House Ways and Means Chair Charles Murphy, House Education Committee Chair Martha Walz, and Senate Education Committee Chair Robert O'Leary and enjoyed a luncheon buffet with Plymouth legislators.
 
Janine Giatrakos and her fourteen (14) member grade 10 advisory went to the Golden Living Center on March 30th to visit and play games with residents.
 
Thirty-four (34) students were inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS) on March 31st. The induction ceremony highlighted the NHS qualities of scholarship, character, service, and leadership. Diane Blaisdell, National Honor Society Co-Advisor gave the key note address.

Family Math Night
On Thursday, March 11th the halls of Nathaniel Morton were filled with families of K-2 students. Through engagement in many fun and challenging math activities, students and families discovered that learning about number concepts can be a great way to spend time together. We had a very good turnout of more than 40% of our kindergarten, first and second graders. A big thank you to the PTA for providing funding to make this evening possible, to Mrs. Avitabile for her organizational efforts, to the many teacher volunteers and students from PNHS who helped run the activities.
 
Enrichment Day
On Saturday, March 20th, more than 200 students participated in over 36 workshops. The weather cooperated and the ever-popular offerings of Survivor and Baseball were held outside in the glorious sunshine! Students enjoyed favorite activities such as the American Doll Hair Salon, and Tie-Dye-T-Shirts, along with some new offerings such as Sand Clay Sand Castles and Camp Half Blood. A sincere thank you to Linda Brown and Anne D'Angelo for coordinating the day, and to the many volunteers who gave up their Saturday morning to make Enrichment Day a huge success.
Scholastic Press Forum Awards:
 
At the Scholastic Press Forum Awards held recently, Plymouth South High School's Panther TV was named BEST TV NEWS PROGRAM in all of New England.
 
Notably Panther TV also took 11 individual awards, receiving more wins than any other program in the region.

FEMA Disaster Recovery Effort:
 
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has setup a disaster recovery center to assistance homeowners, renters and business owners in the counties of Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk, Bristol, Plymouth, and Worcester who were affected by flooding beginning March 10, 2010.
