Dean's
Message

Dean Hill

Friends,

During this holiday season let us take time to meditate on this poem by the Rev. Dr. Howard Thurman:

When the song of
     the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is
     gone,
When the kings and the
     princes are home,
When the shepherds are
     back with their flocks,
Then the work of
     Christmas begins,
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among brothers,
To make music in the heart.

-  The Rev. Dr. Howard

Happy Advent!

We hope this Advent season, the start of the church's liturgical year, finds you well and in a spirit of anticipation.  We invite you to join us for the various programs to take place during the remainder of this fall semester.  We would draw special attention this month to the University Lessons and Carols service on Friday 14 December at 6PM.  Also, we hope you find the announcement of our partnership with BU Habitat for Humanity to be a sign of our continued work toward building a partnership of the Gospel.  The blessings of the Advent/Christmas season be with you and yours.

Habitat for Humanity
Advent is an opportunity for us to take account of all that we have and consider how it might be used to do the work of ministry in the world.  While our annual rituals of donating non-perishables to food banks, giving toys to "tots," and dropping change in the Salvation Army bucket are important ways of hastening the coming of the Kingdom, we must also consider how our seasonal good works might be carried into the future.  After a season of prayerful consideration, Marsh Chapel has decided that it will collaborate with the Boston University chapter of Habitat for Humanity to sponsor and lead the building of a Boston University House.  BU Habitat is a student group on campus led by a group of enthusiastic undergraduates thoroughly committed to fulfilling Dr. Brown's vision of One BU, united in service to the wider community.  We believe at Marsh that in taking a leading role in the construction of BU House, we fulfill our identity as a "heart for the heart of the city."  While construction is slated to begin next year, we already have a site for the house in Lowell, MA and are in the process of finding a family for whom the home will be built.  In the meantime, our most important goal is raising the money to build this house.  The eventual cost will be $50,000, and a good deal of our fundraising effort will involve encouraging the participation of the wider BU community.  BU Habitat, however, will contribute $5,000 towards our goal by the end of this year, a number to which we as a community must aspire.  In the midst of our fundraising efforts, there will be regular build trips to areas within Boston, Lowell, Lawrence, and the South Shore, including one coming up on December 8.  If you would like more information, please contact David Romanik at dromanik@bu.edu.  We hope that you will consider offering your time, talent, treasure, and prayer in support of Marsh Chapel and BU Habitat's vision for a new creation.

CROP Walk
On November 18, 2007, Boston University took a stand--or a walk, rather--against hunger.  BU's first-ever CROP Walk ("CROP" stands for "Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty") brought students and community members together to demonstrate against international hunger.  The CROP Walk, an event created by the Church World Service, was a five-mile long trek that started at Marsh Chapel, looped around the Charles River, and ended again at Marsh Chapel.  BU groups ONE Prayer, COM Champs, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, and University Lutherans along with various Marsh Chapel congregation members all participated.  "The thing I really like about the CROP Walk is that it not only sends aid to poverty-stricken countries around the world, it brings a community together to show that hunger is a devastating problem and we take it very seriously" said Tyler Sit, one of the co-organizers of this event.  The Servant Team, the student leadership group of Marsh Chapel, organized this event with the help of Marsh Chapel Associate Liz Douglass.  "This was my first time organizing anything like this," said Douglass, "but I think we were all very happy with the results."   The funds raised by this event, which will go to aid mission projects in places such as refugee camps in Darfur, totaled to roughly $2,000.  "We were all completely floored when we saw how much money we raised" said Sit.  In addition to sending aid over seas, 25% of CROP Walk funds will go to support charities fighting poverty and hunger in the Boston area.
