As we move into the rest of our summer, many of us are preparing for a busy fall.
We are always working to build on our service standards and the tools we use to communicate with you. If there is anything we've missed, or you think we can improve, please let us know. We appreciate your feedback, and ultimately, if we're not communicating with you effectively, then we're not doing our jobs.
This issue of Insight highlights some reminders on payroll revision and Safe Advantage deadlines. It provides information on upcoming trade shows and our Don't Be a Number back to school contest. We also want to hear from you on how you think our in-house magazine, Reflections, should look, so please give us your feedback.
Enjoy this issue and the rest of the summer.
Sincerely,
Dave Grundy

Payroll Revision
It's hard to believe that the year is half over! Now may be a good time to review the payroll estimate you provided for 2011 and report any significant changes. It's in your best interest to do so, and may help you to avoid an unnecessary penalty.
In 2009, the WSCC Governance Council revised Policy 02.05 Reporting Payroll. The revised policy introduced a new penalty we may apply if employers knowingly underestimate their payroll by 25% or more in any year. The penalty is an additional 10% on the assessment for the underestimated portion over 25%.
The easiest way to avoid this penalty is to report significant changes in your payroll estimate throughout the year. To report your changes, simply complete a Payroll Revision form, available on our website and fax it toll free to 1-866-277-3677 in the NWT or 1-866-979-8501 in Nunavut.
If you have any questions on revising your 2011 payroll, please contact Employer Services at 867-920-3834 in the NWT or 867-979-8510 in Nunavut. |
Putting Reflections to bed
In 2005, we introduced a supplement to our annual report to simplify the information and deliver it in a more streamlined package. This information reflected on the past year's activities and provided readers with timely articles and interesting tips. With six years of Reflections under our belts, it's time for a refresh. Past Reflections covered topics on dangerous materials in the North, like lead, mercury and radium, and provided tips on working safely. It profiled different employers, highlighted WSCC programs, and kept you informed of current events in the safety world. We want to hear from you on how you enjoy Reflections: - Do you enjoy the topics and information?
- Do you like the format?
- What do you look for in an industry magazine like Reflections?
- What do want to see included?
- Do you prefer to read a printed magazine or an electronic version?
- Any critical comments?
Please visit our website and click on Employers/Resources/Publications/Reflections for previous issues to browse through. We value your feedback; please email us with any suggestions on how to improve our magazine. |
Safety on the Road
Every year, we take the WSCC on the road to more than 20 locations around the North. Employees from our Industrial Safety, Mining, and Employer and Claims Services Units attend trade shows to help provide information on our services and resources.
Starting again in September, look for us in these communities across the North until the end of December:
September
Hay River Business and Leisure Show, Hay River,
NWT
Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce (BRCC),
Igloolik/Hall Beach, NU
Nunavut Trade Show, Iqaluit, NU
October
BRCC, Arctic Bay, NU
November
Geosciences Forum, Yellowknife, NWT
BRCC, Pangnirtung, NU
December
BRCC, Pond Inlet, NU
We continue to look for new ways to pass on our safety message to employers, workers, and youth. If you have suggestions for additional shows, email us. |
Safe Advantage Deadline
If you are a Safe Advantage employer, the deadline for the Management Practices Questionnaire quickly approaches on Monday, October 31st, 2011.
If this is the first time for you to complete the Questionnaire, please note there are two parts; prevention and return to work.
The prevention section evaluates a company's health and safety program. The return to work section assesses how a company reintroduces injured workers to safe and productive employment that eliminates or minimizes wage loss, as soon as medically possible.
If you want more information on our Safe Advantage program, please visit our website and click on Employers; there is information on the Questionnaire, the program itself, and FAQs for further information.
Or, please call our Safe Advantage Technician at 867-669-4432. |

Don't Be a Number - Back to School Contest
With the refresh of our Don't Be a Number young worker campaign earlier this year, we continue to try to spread the safety message to young workers.
Beginning the third week of August, we are holding a contest for young workers aged 13-25, challenging them to answer a new safety question each day. Visit the Don't Be a Number facebook page or dontbeanumber.ca for details.
Don't Be a Number offers exciting prizes and great information and resources for young workers.
If you're in Yellowknife or Hay River, listen for our ads on CJCD. For other NWT and Nunavut residents, visit the facebook page or website for details. |
