| Greetings!
In the North, many of us anxiously wait for this season each year. The midnight sun shines brightly, and people put on the extra push to get through their tasks and out the door for holidays and extended weekends.
Workplace injuries and incidents can happen quickly. We must remember to stay focused. No task we perform is worth risking our safety to complete faster.
This issue of Insight shares information on some of our most recent website improvements, how you can get a copy of our Ladder Safety poster, topics on the agenda at our next Governance Council meeting, and the importance of keeping employer payroll estimates current. Have fun this summer and remember to stay safe, whether at work or at play.
Sincerely, Anne Clark President & CEO |

Training Comes to You
Having the tools to work safely includes the knowledge of how to stay safe while at work. To help workers and employers expand their safety knowledge, we regularly offer safety education courses in different communities in the NWT and Nunavut.
If you cannot attend these scheduled sessions, not to worry. Our Prevention Services team may be able to deliver these courses in your workplace. If you would like to schedule safety education courses for your workplace, email us. We will work with you on the details and do our best to accomodate your request. |

Safety Poster:
Ladder Safety
Ladders are a vital tool. They allow us to replace burnt out lights, reach a high shelf or work area, and get to spaces we would not reach otherwise. To help prevent injuries from a fall, it is important you know how to safely use a ladder.
Our Ladder Safety Poster shows the right and wrong way to use a ladder, with detailed illustrations to get the message across.
These posters are available in English, French, and Inuktitut. If you would like a copy for your workplace, or information on our other safety posters, send us an email. |
WSCC Website Updates
Have you visited our website lately? Some of the new additions include an RFP and Tender section, a Safety Notices section, and updated Worker, Employer, and Health Care Provider forms.
We continue to look for ways to improve our website. If you have suggestions of how we can provide you with a better service experience, or you would like to see more information on a topic on our website, email your feedback to our webmaster. |

Governance Council Meetings
The Governance Council holds meetings four times a year, taking place in either Iqaluit or Yellowknife.
The next meeting is in Yellowknife, from September 13-17, 2010. Some of the topics on the agenda include the 2011 Assessment Rates and Year's Maximum Insurable Remuneration (YMIR), and review of policies 00.02-Reconsidering a Decision, 00.03-Interjurisdictional Agreements, 00.08-Decision Making, and 02.06-Unregistered Employers.
If you have something you want to share with our Council, email your feedback. |
Employer Payroll Revisions
With summer stretching on, it is not hard to find an excuse to overlook some paperwork. Keeping your payroll estimate current is not something employers should put off.
If you inaccurately estimate your payroll, you could receive a penalty for underestimating. This penalty starts at $25, and can be as high as $10,000 if your estimate is extremely inaccurate. Keep your payroll estimate current and avoid a penalty. If you have significant changes in your payroll estimate (25% or more), contact our Employer Services Unit and update your estimate.

Workers: Injury Reporting 101
We do our best to stay safe at work, but despite our best efforts, injuries can happen. If you get hurt at work, do you know what to do?
Employers and workers have different injury reporting responsibilities. As a worker, step one is to get help if you need it, whether that is first aid or further medical treatment. If you go to the hospital or health centre, make sure you tell your doctor or nurse that you got hurt at work. You also need to tell your employer about your incident, so they can fulfill their reporting responsibilities.
If you miss time from work because of the incident, you must complete and submit a WSCC Claim: Worker's Report of Injury form. Once we receive all the forms, the claims process starts. We will work with you through the steps that follow. To learn more about injury reporting for workers, visit our website. |
