Greetings!

The olympics may be over, but a lot of us are still riding the wave of patriotism and pride that our country experienced throughout these games.  The olympics unite us all with one common goal: the pursuit of excellence.

We do not have to be olympic athletes to have goals of excellence.  I believe that we can see excellence in many areas, the most important is safety.  Whether your own safety or the safety of others, we all must make it our goal.

In this issue of Insight we include information on our 2010 corporate plan, a safety tip on shovelling snow, and our new WSCC website.  As we go about our work remember that prevention is a team sport, we cannot succeed unless we all do our part.

Sincerely,

Anne Clark
President & CEO

Go Safe: Work Smart_lg

This month Nunavut employers learned how they can make safety their top priority in 2010.  The WSCC held events in both Iqaluit and Rankin Inlet to provide employers with a first-hand look a the new Go Safe: Work Smart Program.

Created by the WSCC for northerners, Go Safe: Work Smart educates new workers on workplace safety and increases their awareness of the importance of health and safety at work.
Both sessions were a success with participants providing positive feedback at both events.

You can learn more about Go Safe: Work Smart, or our other safety education courses, by visiting our website.

Shovelling Snow

Safety Tip:
Shovelling Snow

Something that is hard to avoid this time of year, shovelling snow can almost qualify as a national pastime.  Many people injure themselves during the winter by not shovelling safely.

Prevent injuries.  When you shovel snow:
  • Keep ice chippers in good condition;
  • Push snow to the sides rather than lifting or throwing;
  • Avoid twisting your spine when you toss the snow. Toss it in front of you instead;
  • Step forward when you load your shovel;
  • Bend your knees and keep your back straight to prevent pressure on your lower back; and
  • Take breaks to avoid pushing yourself too hard.
New WSCC Website
New WSCC Website

As part of our commitment to provide you with professional and client-focused services, we developed a new WSCC website.  In early February this new site went live.

The new site increases accessibility through an improved layout.  This new layout provides information specific to our key stakeholders: workers, employers and health care providers.  In addition, the new menus and improved search function make it easier and faster for you to find the information you need.

In the next few weeks we will add a survey to the site to collect your feedback on what works, and how we can improve the site further.  If you have not already visited our new website, click here and take a look.
2010 Calendar
2010 Calendars Still Available

This year's calendar features an improved design that helps you better manage your most important dates.

The calendar comes in two sizes: a large two-sided English and Inuktitut version, or a smaller, tabloid size English version. We have a limited number of quantities left so if you would like a 2010 WSCC calendar for your workplace, just email us.
