Policy Spotlight
Our Governance Council recently approved changes to five of our policies.  The updated policies came into effect on September
24, 2009.

Greetings!

At this time of year we never know what to expect when it comes to the weather.  Some days we get up to the early start of a sunny day, others we awake to the layering of fluffy white snow.  We prepare ourselves to expect the unexpected when it comes to the weather, we should do the same at work.  We must never take our safety or the safety of our workers for granted.

In this issue of Insight we include information on our 2010 assessment rates, a sneak peak at our fall 2009 edition of Reflections, and a safety tip on preventing carpal tunnel.   We all hope for sunny days ahead, but keep our shovels ready for the days the snow flies.

Sincerely,

Dave Grundy
Acting President & CEO

2010-Rates

We announced our 2010 assessment rates last month at information sessions held in Iqaluit and Yellowknife.  To address the effects of the economic downturn, the WSCC raised the average assessment rate by 5%, to $1.80.  This is the first time in three years that the average rate went up from its previous amount of $1.71.

We will mail our 2010 Assessment Rate guides to employers later this month.  However, you can read more about our 2010 Assessment Rate announcement on our website here.

Safety Tip: Prevent Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel syndrome results from damage to the nerve that runs through a channel (carpal tunnel) in the wrist.  Common symptoms include sensations of numbness, tingling, pain, and clumsiness of the hand.

You can help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome by:
  • Keeping your hands warm;
  • Rotating jobs and changing tasks;
  • Planning how you will work and organizing your work station to suit yourself rather than the machine;
  • Using tools that are light, balanced, and sized to suit you; and
  • Keeping your wrist in a comfortable, natural position while you operate tools.

CPR Month

November is CPR month, and those three letters can help save lives. Anyone can learn CPR, and you never know when someone in your workplace may need it.

As part of its commitment to safety, the WSCC partners with St. John Ambulance to provide first aid training for companies in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.  The WSCC funds St. John Ambulance to deliver this training.  The funding is set aside in categories based on the number of workers a business employs.

If your company would like to take part in first aid training, contact the St. John Ambulance office in Yellowknife, at (867) 873-5658 or ykadmin@nt.sja.ca

Getting Your Feedback: Survey and Focus Groups

To improve our programs and services, we need to hear from you. We consulted stakeholders through focus groups in October, across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. We asked about safety and prevention, our programs and services, and what we can do to improve.

Over the next month, we will conduct telephone satisfaction surveys. An outside company will contact customers, employers, and injured workers that we work with everyday. We will ask them about our service delivery, programs we offer, and where we can do better. This feedback will help us plan and identify the areas we can improve. We appreciate your participation and involvement in this important project.
