Greetings!
Fall is upon us, bringing returns to school and routines that we often put aside during the summer. As we get back into the swing of things, make sure that you include safety as part of your daily routine, both at work and at home. Some of the highlights in this issue include our new Go Safe: Work Smart program, our Q2 Activities Report, and a safety tip on refilling portable gas cans safely. We continue to work to provide you with information and resources that help you promote safety in your workplace. This fall, I invite you to join with us in renewing our commitment to work together to make the North a safer place to work. Sincerely,
Anne S. Clark

This fall marks an exciting time for workplace health and safety in the north. We are releasing a new safety education program called Go Safe: Work Smart. Geared towards new and young workers, it was created by northerners, for northerners, and is the first of its kind north of 60.
The cost of workplace injuries and illnesses is significant. It is critical that new and young workers have at least a basic understanding of workplace health and safety. Go Safe: Work Smart will provide participants with the knowledge and tools to stay safe at work.
We will deliver our first Go Safe: Work Smart course on September 21-23, 2009, in the 5th floor Safety Classroom of our Yellowknife office.
In addition to the course, we will also provide a train-the-trainer session to prepare employers to deliver the course at their workplaces. We will deliver the train-the-trainer session on September 24, 2009 at the same training location. You must attend the Go Safe: Work Smart course before you can participate in the train-the-trainer session.
To register for the course, please call toll free 1-800-661-0792 or email. You can also view our safety training schedule on our website here. |

Underestimating your payroll in 2009 could result in penalties if there is a difference between the 2009 estimate you provide and the actual payroll you report.
To help provide an accurate payroll estimate, ask yourself the following questions:
- Will I fill any new positions this year?
- Has my payroll grown historically?
- Did I account for adjustments in salary?
Contact our Employer Services division anytime during the year to revise your estimated payroll whenever there is a significant change. Call toll-free 1-800-661-0792.

Injured Worker Checklist Poster
Knowing how to do your job includes knowing how to work safely. If you get injured at work do you know what to do? To help workers answer this question, we developed the Injured Worker Checklist Poster.
The four steps on the poster show workers what they need to do if they get hurt at work. When you display the poster in your workplace, you will keep your workers informed of the process and prepared to deal with an injury if it happens.
These posters are available in English, French, and Inuktitut. If you would like a copy for your workplace, or information on our other safety posters, just email TinaK@wcb.nt.ca. |

Safety Tip: Filling Portable Gas Cans
Part of life in the north, portable gas cans help us complete work and enjoy our leisure time. However, not filling these containers safely can result in spontaneous fires that can injure you or others. This happens when built up static electricity discharges, potentially creating a spark that can ignite the gasoline.
Here is how you can prevent it:
- Never leave the container in or on your vehicle when refilling.
- Always place the container on the ground, a safe distance away from your vehicle.
- Touch the container with the gas nozzle before you remove the container cap.
- Keep the nozzle in contact with the edge of the container while filling.
