Greetings!
When I think about summer, hiking, camping, boating, and swimming come to mind. There's nothing I wouldn't do to spend my summer doing just those things. That is why I made the commitment to Go Safe! At work or at play, I make safety my number one priority. I encourage you to do the same. Do not miss out on everything our northern landscape has to offer. We work with you and our partners to promote safety awareness, which is why this issue of Insight features two of our safety partnerships, and some of our recent and upcoming safety events. You will also find information on a new contest for our young workers, as well as updates on our activities and safety materials available to you. Have a safe and fun-filled summer.
Sincerely,
Anne S. Clark

Summer Contest Gives Young Workers a Hand
Summer is a busy time for young workers, with a large number of work-related injuries occuring during these months. To increase awareness of the hazards and the importance of safety, the WSCC is holding a contest that encourages young workers to share their stories or messages of workplace health and safety.
Young workers who submit a message or story have a chance to win great prizes; hats, t-shirts and messenger bags, or one of twelve customized iPod Nano's.
Make sure you tell young workers you know to check out DontBeaNumber.ca, and share their story. |

52nd Annual Mine Rescue Competition
Each year the WSCC organizes the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Mine Rescue Competion. Held in Yellowknife, the Competition tests search and rescue teams from mines operating in the two Territories, to allow them to showcase their skills.
This year's Competition starts at the Giant Mine site on Friday, June 12. Following Friday's closed event, all participating teams compete on Saturday, June 13, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, at the Yellowknife Community Arena.
Saturday's competition is open to the public and is a great outdoor family event. Our partner, the NWT Chamber of Mines, will also be on hand, hosting their community BBQ, known as the Miner's Picnic.
If you're in Yellowknife, grab your family and friends and show your support for mine safety |

Constructing Safety
Creating a strong, northern safety culture is a team effort among employers, workers, and organizations. As part of our work toward this goal, the WSCC partnered with the Northern Construction Safety Association (NCSA) in 2007 to help educate northern workers and employers about the importance of workplace safety and zero tolerance for workplace injuries and illnesses. The NCSA provides hands-on safety training to equip employers and workers to develop and implement effective health and safety programs in their workplaces. It bases the courses and programs it offers on the Certificate of Recognition (COR) principles, often used as a pre-qualification requirement for contract bids by Canadian organizations. You can learn more about the NCSA by clicking here.
