Safety Spotlight

Go Safe is an exciting partnership between northern employers and the WSCC geared toward improving workplace safety.  One northern employer, NCC Investment Group, recently completed the Go Safe program and is well on its way to helping foster a safety culture in Iqaluit.

NCC started the Go Safe program in the fall of 2007. Since then, the company fully embraced the idea of the program and ran with it.  As a general contractor on some of the biggest construction sites in Iqaluit, NCC works with a lot of smaller companies as subcontractors.  The subcontractors are required to attend all NCC safety meetings, participate in their safety inspections, and comply with site rules.  Not only are the sites safer, but the subcontractors are able to learn more about working safely.

When asked why it made the decision to Go Safe, NCC's commitment is clear. "Our reason for our commitment to safety is diligence and professional ethics to protect our most important resource, our staff."

WSCC Adopts Quality Assurance Service

The WSCC is committed to service excellence. We actively seek ways in which we can improve our programs and services.

As part of this effort, the WSCC adopted a quality assurance service. Incorporating quality assurance into our organization allows us to further evaluate our performance, and ensure our services meet our high standards of excellence.

Through quality assurance, you can share your concerns, complaints, and questions about the quality of service you receive. With open communication, we can focus our efforts on the service issues important to you.

We are currently reviewing how we, as an organization, can best provide and deliver these services. More information on this new service will be available in the coming months.

To share your thoughts and ideas about our quality assurance service, please contact Danielle Walsh at DanielleW@wcb.nt.ca.
Overexertion Poster
Overexertion Poster
One of the most common causes of time loss claims, overexertion
happens when you push your body beyond what it is able to do. It can occur in any workplace.

The WSCC has a poster available that can help you share this information with your employees.  The poster is two-sided, with English on one and Inuktitut on the other.  If you'd like a copy of the overexertion poster for your workplace, just email SteveD@wcb.nt.ca.
Safety Tip: Using Ladders

As part of its commitment to safety, the WSCC believes that prevention is key to eliminating workplace injuries.  Knowing how to properly use tools and equipment helps avoid injuries.  If your workers use ladders, there are tips they can use to do so safely.

1. Secure ladders at the top with tag lines, or have another worker hold the ladder so it doesn't move.

2. Always face the ladder when climbing up and down, and while working from it.

3. Maintain 3-points of contact when climbing up or down ladders. This means two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand, should be on the ladder at all times.

4. Keep your centre of gravity between the side rails.  Your  belt buckle should never be outside the side rails.

Never stand, sit, or work from the top platform or top step of a ladder.
Go Safe_the Safety Game
WSCC Places First in
International Competition

The WSCC took first place in the Audio Visual Productions category at the recent 2008 American Association of State Compensation Insurance Funds (AASCIF) Communications Awards.

The winning submission, Go Safe:the Safety Game, features a loveable animated safety officer who guides users through different workplaces, identifying and fixing safety hazards.

Despite facing the unique challenges of being a smaller board, this international accomplishment further reinforces the WSCC's commitment to safety, and ingenuity in providing stakeholders with progressive and innovative products and services.

AASCIF is an association of workers' compensation insurance companies, and its membership includes boards and funds in 27 different states as well as 10 Canadian workers' compensation boards. The AASCIF Communications Awards are presented annually, and recognize the most creative and effective communications programs created by workers' compensation boards and funds across the two countries.
