Goodwill Theatre Receives New Roof
The Goodwill Theatre, located at 36 Willow Street in Johnson City, received a new roof this year as we completed the first step in the structure's stabilization. In all preservation projects, stabilization of the building must occur before further preservation efforts follow. Roof replacement, generally the first phase of the stabilization process, is crucially important. CFE Roofing of Endicott, under the supervision of architects Keystone Associates of Binghamton and Killis Almond Associates of Houston, TX, completed this work.
Due to the intricate historical aspects of this preservation project, a decision was made to use a special PVC lining, which greatly increases the life and sustainability of the roof (it has a twenty-year guarantee.) This will ensure that the structure is adequately protected from moisture and other preservation enemies throughout the rehabilitation process and beyond. Only specialized roofing contractors install this special PVC lining, and bid winner CFE handled the project with ease.
Now that the roof is complete, we will forge ahead to stabilize the interior and remove the existing debris, such as pigeon detritus and the old theater rigging. Once that process is complete, we will begin tours. |
FIREHOUSE STAGE'S New Name
SCHORR FAMILY FIREHOUSE STAGE - In March, we celebrated the naming of the SCHORR FAMILY FIREHOUSE STAGE.
Supporters Lawrence & Jennifer Schorr name the SCHORR FAMILY FIREHOUSE STAGE.
On March 29, a gala was held honoring the Schorr family and the christening of the SCHORR FAMILY FIREHOUSE STAGE. A wonderful time was had by all. Magician and mentalist Jeff Grow tantalized us with an awesome show. (Jeff will return to perform on September 26 & 27, 2008. Save the date, as you won't want to miss it!) P.S. Restaurant served enticing food fare and local favorite Freddy Mendoza spinned tunes for us. It was a hot time in the old fire station!

48 Willow Street
The SCHORR FAMILY FIREHOUSE STAGE, located on the first floor of the former Municipal Building at 48 Willow Street in the area formerly occupied by fire wagons, horses and trucks, is ideal for reuse as an alternative theater performance venue to support the Goodwill Theatre Performing Arts Center and School Complex. The SCHORR FAMILY FIREHOUSE STAGE is located directly in the center of Broome County and is easily reached via the Vestal Parkway, Main Street, Floral Avenue and New York State Highway Route 17.
The Municipal Building was built in 1899 and was partially funded by Horace and George Lester of the Lester Bros. Boot & Shoe Company, the predecessor of Endicott Johnson. The building was designed by Sullivan and Bagley. It held the Mayor's Office, fire trucks, and an elaborately paneled courtroom. The basement held Village Offices, a vault and several bowling lanes. Tea dances, community sing-a-longs and events were held in the top floor. In 1899 the Central Fire Station housed the newly consolidated professional Endicott Johnson C. Fred Johnson Hose Company No.2 and the volunteer Independent Hose Company No.1, forming the Lestershire Fire Department.
The SCHORR FAMILY FIREHOUSE STAGE offers a flexible stage and can accommodate 125-150 seats, depending on the configuration. The Lobby features the former "Music Box Jazz Club" art-deco bar. The Stage and Patron Lounge/Actor Lab are used during the daytime for classes, workshops and meetings. Opened in October of 2007, the SCHORR FAMILY FIREHOUSE STAGE is a superb venue for intimate theatrical performances, dance, puppetry, classical music, a Story Time Theater Series, jazz, comedy, family film reels, cabaret, staged readings and more. In addition, the SCHORR FAMILY FIREHOUSE STAGE is available to rent for corporate or private events and meetings. |

GWT Seeks Volunteers As we near the conclusion of our first SCHORR FAMILY FIREHOUSE STAGE partial season, we're gearing up for our inaugural 2008/09 full season. We need help with volunteer ushering, box office, theater tech, historic research, general office work, poster distribution and more. In addition, as we spiff up for the upcoming season, we need to paint, polish and make minor repairs. If you would like to be involved in any way, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Prudy Georgia, at 772-2404, ext. 1 or at volunteer@goodwilltheatre.net.
