Interstate 110 ramp work continues at Maxwell Street and Fairfield Drive
The Maxwell Street on-ramp to I-110 northbound is currently open, but will temporarily close next month to allow crews to continue work on the drainage system. The ramp was closed this spring to begin the work, but as soon as conditions allowed, the ramp was temporarily re-opened in an effort to minimize traffic impacts.
The Maxwell Street on-ramp to I-110 northbound
"We need to close the ramp again in August for about 30 days," said project administrator Frank Tucker of Volkert Construction Services. "The construction contractor is building a stormwater retention pond near the ramp and it won't be safe for traffic during the final phase of construction." Maxwell Street traffic will be detoured north to the Davis Highway on-ramp during next month's ramp closure. Fairfield Drive on-ramp construction The Fairfield Drive on-ramp to Interstate 110 northbound is slated to open next month. The ramp was closed for reconstruction earlier this year. Meantime, drivers are using the new Davis Highway on-ramp to I-110 northbound. The ramp is located approximately one-tenth of a mile south of Fairfield Drive.
Fairfield Drive on-ramp under construction
Improvements are also underway at the intersection of Davis Highway and Fairfield Drive near I-110. Construction crews are widening both roadways and building additional through and turn lanes. Drainage system improvements are also under construction as a part of the I-110/Fairfield Drive interchange upgrades. |
Split diamond interchange construction
Interstate 110 will have a new exit at Airport Boulevard in early 2009. Work continues on a split diamond interchange that will feature an on off-ramp to Airport Boulevard and Brent Lane from I-110 southbound, and an off-ramp to Brent Lane and Airport Boulevard from I-110 northbound.
Split diamond interchange service road under construction
"Airport Boulevard is too close to Brent Lane to permit construction of a separate interchange with dedicated on- and off-ramps," said Mike Lenga, the project administrator from Greenhorne & O'Mara. "Instead, the split diamond design will share on- and off-ramps and connect Brent Lane and Airport Boulevard through a system of service roads." The new interchange at Airport Boulevard will provide a direct, four-lane connection between the interstate system and Pensacola Regional Airport. Archer Western Contractors, Ltd. began work on the $47 million construction project in February 2007 and completion is scheduled for the spring of 2009. |
Brent Lane construction update
Construction crews continue work to widen Brent Lane to six lanes between Davis Highway and Rawson Lane. The work is needed to accommodate the new on- and off-ramps and turn lanes for the I-110/Airport Boulevard-Brent Lane split diamond interchange.
Currently, no lanes are closed and traffic is shifted to the south as workers reconstruct the westbound travel lanes. Once the westbound lanes are completed, traffic will be shifted to the final alignment and work will begin to build the median and center-portion of the roadway. The work on Brent Lane is expected to continue until late this year. Routine lane closures are limited to 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. to minimize traffic impacts and access to adjacent properties is being maintained during business hours. |
Weather impacts
Planned construction activities are weather dependent and may be re-scheduled in the event of inclement weather. For more information, visit
