Hyong Eun Kim writes . . "I began my work at the Tonga Christian radio station (93.1 FM) a few months after coming to Tonga in September 2007. My school had Bible classes every Thursday, and my Bible teacher, Willy Florian, was the manager of the radio Station. One day,Willy asked our class if anybody wanted to host a youth program. I believe the Holy Spirit gave me a strong urge to grasp the opportunity. From that day on, I began sharing God's Word at the radio station as a youth host with a few of my friends on the Christian youth program 'Youth On Fire.' | 'Youth on Fire' high school team prepares their weekly program. Cathy (right) from Fiji is the team leader | Every Monday from 6pm to 7:30pm, my team members and I hosted a program for an hour and a half - playing music and getting calls from listeners for the first thirty minutes or so and then sharing about our topic for the rest of the time on-air. Ever since my friends and I joined Youth On Fire, we have been drawn so much closer to God. As we prepared for each program, we studied the Bible and found out many things about our God we never knew. I believe Youth On Fire has been a huge stepping-stone for me and my relationship with Jesus. It has taught me so many things and led me to experience God in amazing ways. I also grew in confidence. Before this experience, I had a hard time speaking to crowds or doing a speech. However, after serving at the Christian Radio Station, my confidence rose and I was not nervous or shy when speaking in front of a crowd anymore. I also developed leadership and teamwork skills - how to work together to bring out the best in each other and achieve the best.
I worked at the Christian Radio Station until approximately mid-July, 2009, before leaving to New Zealand to start schooling at Epsom Girls Grammar School. I still come back to Tonga frequently during the school holidays and return to being a host at the Christian Radio Station.
Almost every Tongan youth attends church. However, many go because they were brought up to, or simply as a duty. Many youth don't know the true meaning of Christianity and many of them haven't experienced God personally. They attend youth groups, sing in choirs, and come to church every Sunday; but there is no fire in them. We hope that through our radio program the Tongan youth will come to know and experience Christ personally in their lives.
