Tok Tok - News from the Islands
And the walls came tumbling down                                    04 March 2010
Greetings!
Cyclones are usually given girl's names, but René was given a boy's name. And René was the most destructive storm to visit the 163 islands of Tonga for many years.

The next big Challenge
is to repair and finish the new concrete building so we can move the station in before the next cyclone season starts in December.

The new building is designed to be a meeting room and accommodation, but it will be ideal as temporary studios.

Then (if next year's cyclone doesn't do it for us) we can demolish the present wooden building and replace it with a new concrete radio studio.
Cyclone René visits Tonga
It's hard to imagine 230 kph (143 mph) winds

Cyclone damaged new building
When René came a few days ago, his 230kph (143mph) winds were strong enough to blow down the concrete walls of our half constructed training and accommodation building.

The roof of our present wooden studio building is also leaking badly and probably will not survive another cyclone.

Willy Florian (Station Manager of Letio Faka-Kalisitiane 93FM) says the winds were so strong that the staff had to push the big refrigerator against the main door to stop it blowing in. And when he opened the door to his bedroom, the glass blew out of the louvre windows and all his clothes were sucked out through the window, into the storm.
Cyclone damaged toilet block
Cyclone René also took the roof off the station manager's house and blew the walls off the toilet block.

The broken toilet block is a serious matter.

  • We must have a toilet for our workers and visitors.
  • When our radio hosts told our listeners about it we had a plumber and builder come to fix the toilets.
  • While their labor is a gift, we need TOP $600.00
    (USD $300; AUD $340; NZD $450)

    to pay for materials.
For obvious reasons
we need to get the toilets repaired and paid for
as soon as possible.
Please consider helping fix the toilets in Tonga

Malo Aupito (thank you very much in Tongan)
And by the way  . . .

Praise the Lord!
Our Christian radio station was the only radio station able to continue broadcasting throughout the big storm!

"Finally, dear brothers and sisters,
I ask you to pray for us.
Pray first that the Lord's message will spread rapidly and be honored wherever it goes,
just as when it came to you."

(2 Thessalonians 3:1)

May God bless you
