Tok Tok - Over 75,000 homeless after big waves
UCB Pacific Partners                                                             29 December 2008
Greetings!

The people of the west Pacific need our prayers!
When I emailed before Christmas I mentioned big waves have made 50,000 people homeless in PNG and caused major damage in the Marshall Islands. [ read more ]

Those big waves have continued during Christmas
some are reported to be 18 feet high!

Since I emailed, the situation has got much worse in PNG and the Marshall Islands

Here is the most recent information I have
Papua New Guinea
According to the Pacific Islands Report from the East West Center in Hawaii . . .
". . . many are in need of basic supplies like food and water, the United Nations said Friday. The government and Papua New Guinea Red Cross estimated that over 75,000 people have been displaced and about half will need urgent help.
. . . A UN spokesman said the impact and magnitude of the sea swells were "uncommon." Its disaster assessment team arrived in Port Moresby this week. Already, the charity Oxfam identified drinking water as the main priority, given that underground sources have been polluted and there is a risk of the spread of water born diseases.
Food rations were being handed out to those in need by the government, but aid agencies reported shortages of tents and mosquito nets. The UN said it was still gathering information and lacked knowledge about the situation in remote areas."

Marshall Islands
Steve Clark of Christian radio 'The change 104.1FM' in Majuro emailed . . .
"We ask you to keep the Marshall Islands in your prayers.  We continue to see high tides and again this week we are beginning to be pounded again.  We covet your prayers and ask you to join with us as we cover the Marshalls in the Gospel and with Prayer."

Steve also emailed . . .
". . . we are getting feedback from the outer islands on injuries and damages there.  One fourteen year old girl here on Majuro had both legs cut off during the three days of tidal surges.  A piece of roofing tin was pushed through the surf hitting her and severing her legs.  Please keep her and her family in prayer.

The Marshall Islands have now declared a State of Emergency [ read BBC news report ]
Oh Lord, please help Your people
in PNG and the Marshall Islands who are suffering at this time

"Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.
Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
If you do this, you will experience God's peace,
which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand.
His peace will guard your hearts and minds
as you live in Christ Jesus.
