Tok Tok - Bad and good news
UCB Pacific Partners                                                               27 October 2008
Greetings!
Often I'm asked "How is the ministry in the Islands these days?". I find it hard to give a short answer because there are two parts to it. Like the old joke: I have good news and bad news, which do you want to hear first?
Actually, it's because of the bad news that I have some good news to tell you!

Jesus told us what to do
In Matthew 9:36-38 we read . . .

36 He [Jesus] felt great pity for the crowds that came, because their problems were so great and they didn't know where to go for help. They were like sheep without a shepherd.

37 He said to his disciples, "The harvest is so great, but the workers are so few.

38 So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send out more workers for his fields."
(Matthew 9:36-28 NLT)

There is a harvest waiting to be gathered in the Islands and it's getting larger as time goes by. But we are very short of workers.

Please pray with us for the Lord to send more workers into His harvest fields of the South Pacific Islands.
We don't want to miss any opportunity!

First the bad news . . .
The financial recession is really hurting

Some Pacific governments have cut workers' wages (if they have jobs, most people in most countries are working for the government). At the same time the cost of bread has trebled in one country I know of, and a sack of rice now costs $50.00 in another country.

Recently when I was in Tonga, diesel was costing TOP$4.30 a litre (USD$7.60 a gallon) and electricity was TOP$1.04 a unit. (That's USD $0.49 compared with USD 06c to 14c a unit for US consumers).

So life is getting harder in the Islands.
Not just the economy. We hear frequent news about global warming (many Islands barely rise above sea level) and daily stories of corruption and violence around the region.
No wonder Pacific Island people are increasingly worried and fearful!
Now to the good news!
More people are responding to the Gospel

As fear and uncertainty grows, more radio listeners are seeking real answers.
People are realizing the powerlessness of religious tradition and responding to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Radio listeners gather
in homes to study the Bible with our local radio teacher. Members of this Listener Group (13 people) came to Christ through our ministry in Tonga and were baptized in the ocean by radio staff.

As the darkness grows our faithful workers
are working hard to shine the light even more brightly!
There is always more to be done
than we can manage with our limited resources
Actually, that's not true - God has given us prayer.
Prayer is our unlimited resource for His work!
Will you please join us in prayer?
  • Pray for our national workers.  I'm so proud of the people the Lord has given us. Committed to the task; quick to learn; with a passion for Jesus Christ.
  • Pray for our national leaders. These (mostly young) men and women are the key to gathering in the Lord's harvest in their nations. Radio ministry and Biblical discipleship is rare in the Islands (so is Biblical leadership) so our leaders learn everything on the job.
  • And pray for more people like you . . . more Partners praying, encouraging, and donating to equip our national workers for gathering in the Lord's harvest.
We certainly don't want to miss any opportunity
as people become more and more aware
of their need for Jesus Christ!
