Losing Inches versus Losing Pounds.
What's the Difference?
What is the difference between losing inches and losing pounds? Sometimes people in my weight loss clinics get discouraged when they weigh in and don't see a big change on the scale. For some people they may not see a difference for up to 3 weeks. However, they start to feel a difference in how their clothes fit. What is happening is that they are burning fat while building muscle. The net difference on the scale may be zero, but they are losing inches of fat. I want you to visualize or even do what I am saying to see what I mean. Hold up your hand and hold your thumb and pointing finger about 3 inches apart. That is about the depth or width of a pound of fat. Move your finger down so that it is about ½ inch from your thumb. That is about the depth or width of a pound of muscle. A pound is still a pound. But a pound of muscle is denser than a pound of fat. So as my clients burn fat, they build muscle so the gap between your finger and your thumb gets smaller but your weight may not change. Of course the more muscle you have on your body, the higher your metabolism is. It is good to have this muscle on your body. Really what matters most is that you are feeling stronger and you are losing inches. The weight will come down eventually, but you will feel the inches lost first. |

Shelley's Success Story
Holly helped coach Shelly to a 100 pound loss!
Shelley was sick and tired of being 'sick and tired', so she decided to do something about it. She teamed up with Holly at Fitting Fitness In and her local personal trainers at All Canadian Fitness, in Ontario, Canada. With the help and support of her team and her own hard work and determination, Shelley met her goal of losing 100 pounds in December! Holly coached her over the phone and even met with her in person a couple of times! Shelley is thrilled to be wearing a flattering dress to her son's wedding in July, but more importantly, she is feeling so good about herself that she wanted to share her 'lost 100' journey and hopes to inspire others to start their own journeys, too. Read about Shelley's journey on the FFI success story page. |
