| The Holiday Meal is a 3000 Calorie Deal
Its holiday time and it seems that getting into the holiday spirit requires eating. But it helps to have a clear view of your choices as the Thanksgiving meal approaches.
The typical Thanksgiving meal is around 3000 calories. Here are some easy alternatives to lighten the calorie load.
Appetizers
- Instead of eating the cheese and crackers or the pate' - eat the vegetables and a small amount of dip or scallops (not the wrapped kind). You can save yourself over 700 calories.
- Be careful of the nuts that are displayed in nice little bowls all over the room - ½ cup of mixed nuts is 440 calories.
Main Meal
- The turkey itself is not bad, calorie wise, but if you can go for the white meat and skip the skin you will be saving calories there.
- Easy on the gravy it is about 40 calories per tablespoon.
- The stuffing is heavy on calories so practice portion control or skip it all together.
- Fill up on the vegetables.
Dessert
- Any dessert made from white flour is going to be high in calories. If you're going to have pie, have a small piece.
- Another alternative is to bring something other than pie for dessert.
Alcohol
- Last but not least minimize the amount of alcohol you drink. You can drink a lot of calories in just one drink. For every glass of alcohol, drink a glass of water. It will help to fill you up and you won't get dehydrated.
