Staying "In Step" During the Winter Months
Getting in 10,000 steps a day may seem like an impossible task during the slippery, snowy winter months. But it's not. Wear your pedometer and follow our tips, and you'll fall in step in no time.
- Laps around the mall. Not everyone likes the frigid temps. But that's not an excuse to hang up your walking shoes until spring. Strap on your sneakers, head to your local mall, and do 2-3 laps. Take the stairs between floors, not the elevator. Walking at a brisk pace, you'll burn 225 calories per hour*. As a reward, treat yourself to a non-edible present, such as a CD. (This is an ideal workout for parents-you can let the kids have their fun while keeping an eye on them at the same time.)
- Sledding. This is something you can do with the kids, your sweetheart, or your friends. Yes, you don't get in those precious steps when you're on the sled, but how about the huffing and puffing you need to do when you're lugging your sleigh up the hill? It's so much fun, you won't believe it counts as exercise, but it does. During an hour of sledding, you're likely to burn 476 calories per hour*.
- Snowshoeing. For those of you who like to frolic in the fluffy white stuff, snowshoes are your new best friend. It's a fun activity that takes no training, and you'll burn 544 calories per hour* while getting your steps in and your heart rate up.
- Shoveling snow. Snow happens every winter in the Northeast and needs to be cleared from driveways and sidewalks. To protect your back from injury, stand with your feet about hip width for balance and keep the shovel close to your body. Bend from the knees (not the back) and tighten your stomach muscles as you lift the snow. Avoid twisting movements. If you need to move the snow to one side reposition your feet to face the direction the snow will be going. Though not as much fun as other winter activites, you'll burn 408 calories per hour*.

*Calories burned are approximate for a 150 pound person. |
The Truth About Hot Chocolate!
Whether you're a kid or a kid at heart, nothing beats a steaming cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter's day. But can you enjoy it without feeling guilty? Yes. Remember, it's all about making smart choices, not depriving yourself of special treats.
