Are you a turkey during holiday food fests?
There is a way to enjoy the tasty offerings the upcoming holiday season has to offer without blowing your healthy eating habits.
Avoid Appetizer Pitfalls
Appetizers can kill your intentions of eating healthy this holiday. Most appetizers are very fatty. Choose the vegetables and go easy on the dip. Yes, a piece of cheese is okay, but do you have to eat the crackers too?
Entering Entrée Heaven
If you have any control over the holiday dinners choose the foods wisely. If not, then you can make wise choices from the foods provided.
- White meat has fewer calories, opt for white over dark meat.
- Remove the skin off the turkey before eating.
- Hold the gravy.
- Take small portions of whatever you like, don't deny yourself. Don't eat what you don't like to make someone else feel good.
- Choose between stuffing or mashed potatoes. Better yet, choose the sweet potato.
Doing the Dessert Dance
You do not have to test every dessert. Allow yourself one "high-test" dessert. Pick the one that you will enjoy the most. Remember portion control, all the taste is in the first two bites. Try out the Citrusy Pumpkin Pudding recipe in this newsletter. One piece of pumpkin pie is about 350 calories and 5 grams of fat. For the same calories and fat you could have five servings of the Citrusy Pumpkin Pudding.
Taking the Guilt-Free Road
Go out for a walk with the family after the big meal instead of plopping down in front of the TV. Include active activities in the schedule for everyone to enjoy. Exercise in the morning before the guests arrive or before you leave if you are traveling to dinner. |
Pediatric West's H.E.L.P. Program
