Greetings!

As the summer draws to an end and we approach Fall in New England we find ourselves wanting to get outside more to savor the warm weather.  Learn about what you can do outside for day trips whether you are in the city or the country.  Check out the different clinics and programs we have taking place this fall.

Day Trips for the Healthy-Hearted

Hiker

The summer is winding down and you're probably thinking to yourself "I haven't spent enough time outside".  Plan a few day trips to finish off your summer fun.  Whether you are in a city or in the country you have many options.

For City Dwellers plan a day where you go on a guided walking tour.  In Boston you have the Beacon Hill walking tours ( www.beaconhillwalkingtours.com) which you can take and visit historic sites within the city.  New York City has the BIG ONION walking tours (www.bigonion.com).  Washington D.C. has the Washington Walks (www.washingtonwalks.com).  Pack a lunch, wear your pedometer (you don't want to miss out on counting all those steps) and enjoy a long, healthy walk while exercising your brain as well.

If you are a Country Bumpkin and want to experience the great outdoors go for a hike. It is always best to follow marked trails when hiking.  If you are up for a mountain hike try Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey, NH (www.mountainsummits.com).  It has many trails with varying levels of difficulty so there is a trail for everyone.  Make sure to bring the following essential items on your hike:  water, sunscreen, insect repellent, additional clothing, food and matches.  Pack high energy snack foods like granola bars, trail mix, crackers, bagels with peanut butter.

Going for a family bike ride is great exercise for everyone.  Many towns have country bike paths now so that you are not riding on the streets.  The Mass Highway website has a webpage dedicated to bike paths in Massachusetts (www.mhd.state.ma.us).  Pack a lunch, plenty of water and peddle your way to a healthy heart.

Another fun activity we do every summer with the kids is to go through the Davis Mega Maze (www.DavisMegaMaze.com).  It is a maze made out of a corn field.  The maze theme changes every year and it can be challenging.  Be sure to wear your pedometer because you will definitely get some steps in while have fun with the family.

Enjoy the last days of summer with Heart Healthy day trips.

"I've been dieting off and on since I was 12 years old.  You name it, I've tried it.  I always saw dieting as a punishment, and I was limited in what activities I could do because of my obesity.

From the moment I met Holly, I felt I was in the hands of a professional.  I just knew that with Holly by my side, I could accomplish what I've been trying to do all my life; lose weight and stay healthy. Since starting with Holly, I have lost 34 pounds and 20 inches (7 inches off my waist).

Holly helps you stay focused on your goals for the future, not the dieting failures of the past.  Holly showed me how to fit fitness in to my everyday life and that it's never all or nothing, but often small steps that lead  to obtaining long-term goals.  I've learned that exercise isn't something you do for a limited period of time just to obtain a goal, but that you can integrate it into your life and have it be enjoyable.

Because of Holly's support and encouragement, I now have a belief in myself and can stay focused on my goals to lose weight and take care of myself.  I look forward to the future with renewed enthusiasm knowing that Holly has, in a sense, saved my life.  Yes, I've done the work to get there, but I could not have done it without her."
