November 8, 2011 Update


Greetings ~ 


Good news continues to happen in the St. Louis Metro East region!  Since our last regular NewsLink, we had welcomed announcements at MIdAmerica St. Louis Airport and America's Central Port (see Oct. 31st special edition) along with the release of the new Scott Air Force Base economic impact study and our region's feature in the new issue of Inbound Logistics. Combined with the other positive stories in this edition, it has been a great way to start the Fall Season.

New pizzeria to open in Edwardsville (Belleville News-Democrat, 10/19/11)


In a sign of further economic recovery for the commercial sector in the Metro East, Dewey's Pizza will open its first restaurant in Illinois at 112 E. Vandalia Street in Edwardsville. The Cincinnati-based restaurant also has establishments in Kirkwood, Mo; University City, Mo; Ellisville, Mo and Webster Groves, Mo. To view the article, click here.


Sitton Construction Group completes work on two projects at McKendree University (St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 10/21/11)  


Sitton ConstructionLeadership Council member Sitton Construction Group recently completed work for fellow Leadership Council member McKendree University in Lebanon. Sitton Construction Group served as the owner's representative and oversaw the design and construction of renovations to the campus' dining hall and new $16 million, 75,000-square-foot student housing facility. New bridge slated to spur $25.3 billion(St. Louis Business Journal, 10/21/11)  NMRB Aerial


The Mississippi River bridge, a long time priority for the Leadership Council, is over halfway complete after 19 months of work, according to the St. Louis Business Journal.To date, IDOT and its partners at MoDOT have begun work on $430 million in various projects. While Greg Horn of MoDOT said the project's total anticipated price tag had increased due to add-ons such as the $53 millionRoute 3 interchange on the Illinois side, he noted that officials still expect to complete the project under budget. I-255 revs up Madison County's economic engine  (St. Louis Business Journal, 10/21/11)


Illinois' investment of over $180 million to extend Interstate 255 from Interstate 270 near Edwardsville to U.S. Highway 67 near Godfrey is having the positive economic impact on Madison County that we envisioned. The St. Louis Business Journal reports the extension is not expected to be complete until fall 2012, yet Walmart has already opened a new $8 million store in Godfrey near one of the new exits for the I-255 extension. Local real estate brokers are predicting that other retail, hotel/motel and restaurant developers will follow suit near the new extension between Seminary Road and Highway 67.  Ground broken for new school (The Alton Telegraph, 10/30/11) 


The Gillespie School Board recently broke ground for the district's new elementary school, which will be named Ben-Gil Elementary School. The Alton Telegraph reports that Leadership Council member Korte and Luitjohan Construction was awarded the construction contract and is scheduled to complete the project by December 2012. The original school was built in 2002 but was structurally destroyed due to mine subsidence forcing its immediate closure. Click here to learn more. 



Scott's economic impact on region grows to more than $3B, study shows

The Belleville News Democrat was one of several local media outlets that covered last week's announcement that the economic impact of Scott Air Force Base has grown to surpass $3 billion annually. That was one of the findings of a recent study conducted by the Leadership Council in partnership with Civic Progress and the Regional Business Council to measure the current impact that Scott has on surrounding communities and the St. Louis metropolitan area.
