 Pentecost

Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength, so you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Keeping up with Canon Liz:

Vision & Goals
 VISION

All Episcopalians in Hawai`i shall work together to create a Church filled with visible and spirit-driven Christians - Christians who are eager to share our Episcopal tradition and faith, and traditional Hawaiian spiritual values, with those who have not yet found a spiritual anchor in their lives.

GOALS

1)  Convert our Hearts to Accept Jesus' Gospel Message and to Live in a Deep Relationship with God.
2)  Transform the Episcopal Church in Hawai`i and Congregations to Vital and Vibrant Faith Communities.
3)  Evangelize to Share God's Love in Our Communities.
4)  Reduce the structure and administration costs of the Diocese so that its operations, including its bodies, are directed to supporting transformation and growth.

The Five Marks of Mission of the Worldwide Anglican Communion:

1)  To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom

2)  To teach, baptize and nurture new believers

3)  To respond to human need by loving service

4)  To seek to transform unjust structures of society

5)  To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.

Presiding Bishop calls for reflection on tenth anniversary of September 11 attacks

On Sunday, September 11, Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori will be in New York City, preaching at St. Paul's Chapel at 7:30 a.m. (Eastern time).  At 11:00 a.m., she will preach at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City.  The following is the Presiding Bishop's statement on the September 11 anniversary:

jefferts schori 2As we mark the tenth anniversary of the events of September 11, The Episcopal Church continues to work for healing and reconciliation.

Americans experienced the first large non-domestic terrorist attack on our own soil that day, a reality that is far too much a present and continuing reality in other parts of the world.  We joined that reality in 2001.  Many people died senselessly that day, and many still grieve their loss.  All Americans live with the aftermath - less trust of strangers, security procedures for travelers that are intrusive and often offensive, and a sense that the world is a far more dangerous place than it was before that day.  Our own nation has gone to war in two distant places as a result of those events.  The dying continues, and the world does not seem to have become a significantly safer place.

Yet we believe there is hope.  People of faith gave sacrificially in the immediate aftermath of the plane crashes, trying to rescue those in the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, trying to subdue the aggressors on the plane over Pennsylvania, and reaching out to neighbors and strangers alike on that apocalyptic day.  Clergy and laity responded to the crisis in New York, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania, and prayer services erupted in churches and communities across the nation.  St. Paul's Chapel, near the site of the Towers, opened its doors to the emergency responders, and volunteers appeared with food and socks, massaging hands and praying hearts.  Volunteers continued to staff the Chapel for months afterward, and prayers were offered as human remains were sought and retrieved in the ruins of the Towers.

Church communities in many places began to reach out to their neighbors of other faiths, offering reassurance in the face of mindless violence.  That desire for greater understanding of other traditions has continued, and there are growing numbers of congregations engaged in interfaith dialogue, discovering that all the great religions of the world are fundamentally focused on peace.  The violence unleashed on September 11, and in its aftermath was the work of zealots, disconnected from the heart of their religions' foundations.

This tenth anniversary is above all, an opportunity for reflection.  Have we become more effective reconcilers as a result?  Are we more committed to peace-making?  The greatest memorial to those who died ten years ago will be a world more inclined toward peace.  What are you doing to build a living memorial like that?

The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori

Presiding Bishop and Primate

The Episcopal Church

Six-week Reflections on Stewardship: "Feasting on Gratitude"

bread imageThe Episcopal Church Office of Stewardship has developed a six-week series of readings, reflections and questions called "Feasting on Gratitude", to assist in discerning the practice of intentional and proportional giving to one's faith community.

"Feasting on Gratitude" invites individuals and congregations to reflect and discuss stewardship principles and practices, based on the Sunday gospel readings from Matthew, for October 2 through November 6, which is All Saints Sunday.

"The month of October is when most congregations across the country embark on their annual giving campagin," noted The Rev. Laurel Johnston, Episcopal Church Officer for Stewardship.  "The purpose of an annual giving campaign is not only to raise support for the life-giving ministries of the congregation, but to also help members of the faith community explore intentional and proportional giving as a spiritual practice that reflects gratitude and generosity for all that has been given."

Prepared by six Epsicopalians from across the country, "Feasting on Gratitude" is designed to complement and support a congregation's annual giving campaign.  The contributing writers explore stewardship, giving, gratitude and generosity in connection with the Gospel lection for each Sunday.

For more information and to download the series, go to The Episcopal Church website link here.
