Prayer

 Pentecost

O Lord, mercifully receive the prayers of your people who call upon you, and grant that they may know and understand what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Vision & Goals
 VISION

All Episcopalians in Hawai`i shall work together to create a Church filled with visible and spirit-driven Christians - Christians who are eager to share our Episcopal tradition and faith, and traditional Hawaiian spiritual values, with those who have not yet found a spiritual anchor in their lives.

GOALS

1)  Convert our Hearts to Accept Jesus' Gospel Message and to Live in a Deep Relationship with God.
2)  Transform the Episcopal Church in Hawai`i and Congregations to Vital and Vibrant Faith Communities.
3)  Evangelize to Share God's Love in Our Communities.
4)  Reduce the structure and administration costs of the Diocese so that its operations, including its bodies, are directed to supporting transformation and growth.

The Five Marks of Mission of the Worldwide Anglican Communion:

1)  To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom

2)  To teach, baptize and nurture new believers

3)  To respond to human need by loving service

4)  To seek to transform unjust structures of society

5)  To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.

The following article contains excerpts from an announcement by Bishop Fitzpatrick to the Congregation of the Cathedral of St. Andrew, dated July 2, 2011.

The Rev. Walter Brownridge Called to be Dean of the Cathedral

Walter BrownridgeIt is with pleasure that I announce today, I appointed, with the unanimous consent of Chapter, the Rev. Dr. Walter Brownridge to serve as the next Dean of the Cathedral of St. Andrew, Honolulu.  Fr. Brownridge has accepted the call.

The Reverend Dr. Walter Brownridge is an Episcopal (Anglican) Priest from the Diocese of Ohio, currently serving as Associate Dean for Community Life at the School of Theology, Sewanee:  The University of the South.  His principal duties concern the overall formation of seminarians for the priesthood and to facilitate their formation in a variety of aspects beyond their academic work.

Prior to his appointment at Sewanee, Fr. Brownridge served the Episcopal Church and broader Anglican Communion in a variety of ministry settings.  He has served congregations in Ohio, Delaware, New York City and South Africa. Fr. Brownridge has experience in liturgy, pastoral care, HIV & AIDS ministry and racial reconciliation.

In service at the National level of the Episcopal Church, Fr. Brownridge is a member of the Standing Commission on Constitution and Canons.

Walter has been married since 1982 to his wife, Christina Nader-Brownridge.  They are the parents of two sons, Alec Thurgood (born in 1990, currently a student at Brown University) and Martin Desmond (born in 1995, currently a student at St. Andrew's - Sewanee School).

Open Auditions for a Unique Child & Adult Choir

by Rev. Dan Werning, Choirmaster, Hawai'i Sacred Choir

Sacred choir

Island-wide auditions are now being held for the Hawai'i Sacred Choir.  We are modeling after the British Choir of King's College, known for their unique, ethereal sound.  We are auditioning male and female CHILD voices plus ADULT, high school, and college voices (altos, tenors, countertenors, and bass-baritones).  Choir starts September 2011, with concerts at St. Andrew's Cathedral and the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in December.  Rehearsals will be Wednesday evenings for adults and after school on either Tuesdays and Thursdays (advanced) or Mondays and Wednesdays (beginners) for children.

For info/audition appointments, email hawaiisacredchoir@hawaii.rr.com or call 808-388-5264.  Visit www.hawaiisacredchoir.org for further information.  If you have a beautiful voice, we want to hear it!

John Renke, St. Andrew's Cathedral Director of Music, states, "The Hawai'i Sacred Choir has a unique place in the city's choral scene...the timeless sound of children's voices singing the rich heritage of sacred music by adult standards."

COPIM Focuses on Needs of Pacific Islanders Throughout the Diocese by Ann Dugdale Hansen, COPIM Coordinator

MicronesiaFormerly part of the Pacific Islander Youth Ministry based at St. Elizabeth's Church, COPIM (Commission on Pacific Islander Ministry) was launched last November, and is off to a strong start.  Some of our programs at St. Elizabeth's include an after-school musical program for youth, a sound studio, crafts workshop and a community garden.  Promoting programs focused on the needs of Pacific Islanders is one of the "key ministries" that Bishop Fitzpatrick proposed in his October 2010 address in the Hawaiian Church Chronicle as "an opportunity and openness to cultural/ethnic diversity as central to being welcoming and inclusive congregations."  Following our Bishop's lead, COPIM's mission is to facilitate the integration of Pacific Island peoples into the congregations and life of the Episcopal Church of Hawai'i.

COPIM is composed of Ann Hansen of St. Andrew's as the Coordinator, Lot Lau of Epiphany, Preston Lentz of St. Elizabeth's, Fr. Saimone Lino of St. Elizabeth's, and Fr. Dick Tardiff of Christ Church as the core group, along with Fr. David Gierlach and others who track COPIM's projects from the sidelines.  So far, our programs for Pacific Islanders have focused on churches in urban Honolulu (originally St. Elizabeth's and more recently St. Mary's and a group that uses St. Peter's), because that was where the concentration of Micronesian immigrants resided.  But as the COFA (Compact of Free Association) migration progresses, the Micronesian population is spreading out from the urban core to Aiea, Waipahu, Wahiawa, Ewa Beach, Kapolei and areas on the Big Island.

Although not Anglican, these communities of newcomers are Christian and deeply grateful to be welcomed into nearby churches.  COPIM is investigating the most effective ways to address the needs of immigrant groups in churches on the path of this migration.  It is more productive to elicit from them what their needs are and design a program around that, than to come up with a preconceived notion of what a program should look like.  The programs that are currently in place, and the programs soon to be developed, belong to the Diocese as a whole.  If your community has a population of Pacific Islanders and wishes services from COPIM, please contact the Office of the Bishop, which will forward your request to us at COPIM.

How much do you know about The Iolani Guild?

Learn more at a meeting coming up on September 10

by Anne Hansen, Publicity Chair of The Iolani Guild

Considering that the Iolani Guild has been in existence for more than 140 years, how much do you know about it?  Can you sort out if these questions are myths or if they are true?

1.  You have to Hawaiian to be in the Iolani Guild.

2.  You have to be female to be in the Iolani Guild.

3.  You have to be a member of Saint Andrew's Cathedral.

4.  You have to be an Episcopalian.

queen emma

Answers:

1.  False.  You do not have to be Hawaiian to be in the Iolani Guild.  Afterall, Queen Emma founded the Guild along with Bishop Thomas Nettleship Staley's wife, Catherine.  She was, of course, of English ancestry.  The tradition of welcoming people of all ancestries who are interested in preserving Hawaiian history continues today.

2.  False.  You do not have to be female to be a member of the Iolani Guild.  In the olden days, it was just women only.  Nowadays, members include Bishop Bob Fitzpatrick, Rev. Darrow Aiona and other men.  Both men and women are welcome.

3.  False again.  You do not need to be a member of Saint Andrew's.  The Iolani Guild is diocesan-wide, drawing in members from various churches.  While it is easier to attend meetings if you live on O'ahu, members of Episcopal churches throughout the islands, and even the mainland and abroad, are welcome.  That gives away the answer to the last question.

4.  This one is true, because you do need to be an Episcopalian to be a member of the Iolani Guild.  That is the one requirement, besides being interested in Hawaiian history and preserving Hawaiian culture.

Out of these four questions, how did you do?  If you have been around the Cathedral or the Diocese for a long time but were unsure about answering these questions, you might like to learn more.  There is a meeting coming up on Saturday, September 10, at 11:00 a.m., where you can learn more about the Iolani Guild, the agency with the longest continuous history in the islands.  See you there!

For more information, contact Ann Hansen.
