| Season of Lent | | |
O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

| | VISION | | |
All Episcopalians in Hawai`i shall work together to create a Church filled with visible and spirit-driven Christians - Christians who are eager to share our Episcopal tradition and faith, and traditional Hawaiian spiritual values, with those who have not yet found a spiritual anchor in their lives.
GOALS
1) Convert our Hearts to Accept Jesus' Gospel Message and to Live in a Deep Relationship with God. 2) Transform the Episcopal Church in Hawai`i and Congregations to Vital and Vibrant Faith Communities. 3) Evangelize to Share God's Love in Our Communities. 4) Reduce the structure and administration costs of the Diocese so that its operations, including its bodies, are directed to supporting transformation and growth.
The Five Marks of Mission of the Worldwide Anglican Communion:
1) To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom 2) To teach, baptize and nurture new believers 3) To respond to human need by loving service 4) To seek to transform unjust structures of society 5) To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth

Greetings!
Aloha and greetings! Canon Liz is now on sabbatical, traipsing the green hills of England and Ireland. Though half a world away, you can track her adventures through Beasley's Blog, found on the Diocesan website. There is already an entry and a few pictures posted, so be sure to check it out!
Meanwhile, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the Diocese as the communications contractor. As you can see, the E-News has undergone a slight remodeling ~ not only have the colors changed to reflect the current season of Lent, but new category headings and some graphic elements have been added that will hopefully enhance your viewing experience.
In just a couple weeks, our first E-Chronicle will be coming out. I would like to ask that each congregation share the good work you are doing with others in the Diocese, by submitting articles, pictures and announcements for publication. You may use the news link in the contact section below.
Also, be sure to forward communications to other church members and encourage them to subscribe to the e-news, to stay informed of what's happening and what's being offered, not only in Hawai'i, but the entire Episcopal Church and broader Anglican Communion.
I look forward to hearing from you and sharing the Good News!
Mahalo & Blessings,
Sybil

Bishop's Japan Appeal
Please pray for all those impacted by the earthquake and tsunami off the coast of Japan. Particularly remember our sisters and brothers in the Nippon So Ko Kai and Archbishop Nathaniel Uematsu, and the Diocese of Tohoku and their bishop, John Kato, which has been the hardest area hit.
Friday's earthquake (8.9) is the most powerful to hit Japan since officials began keeping records in the late 1800s. More than 30 aftershocks have followed, the strongest measuring 7.1.
"I have been trying to collect the information from the provincial office and from all the dioceses of NSKK [Nippon Sei-Ko-Kai; the Anglican-Episcopal Church of Japan]," wrote the Most Rev. Nathaniel M. Uematsu, Primate of Japan & Bishop of Hokkaido. "Because of the scale of damage and devastation, our communication has had great difficulty, and I have not heard anything from the Diocese of Tohoku which has been hit most by the earthquakes and tsunamis, and I am very concerned for Bishop John Kato and churches and people in his diocese."
I ask that all our congregations take a special collections on Sundays, March 13 and March 20, at all worship services. All money collected can be forwarded to (and checks can be made payable to) "The Episcopal Church in Hawai'i" here at my office. Please note that the money is for "Bishop's Japan Appeal". I will forward the funds collected to the Church in Japan as soon as we are informed how best to support the ministry in the impacted area.
I issue this call for prayer and a special collection, confident in your compassion, in the name of Jesus Christ. I also send it with gratitude to the Diocese as we were able to send $5,000 (US) to Bishop Kuru Gray and Kite Wai Pounamu from the appeal at the end of February for recovery efforts in Christchurch, New Zealand. Please continue to pray for our brothers and sisters there as well.
+Bob

Presiding Bishop on the Earthquake in Japan
Episcopal Church Presding Bishop, Katharine Jefferts Schori, offers the following concerning the devastating earthquake in Japan:
"The Episcopal church is praying for the people of Japan, particularly Bishop John Kato, the clergy, and people of the Diocese of Tohoku in the aftermath of this devastating earthquake. We will continue to pray with Japan as she seeks the lost and begins to bury the dead. May they rest in peace, and may all those who mourn find comfort. We know the aftermath will be long and difficult, and we assure you of our solidarity . We are grateful that most other parts of the Pacific have withstood the passage of the first tsunami. May we all be reminded that we live on a fragile earth, on continual process of creation and destruction, and that we share a common responsibility for healing wherever we are able."

Japan Earthquake Response Fund
The Episcopal Relief & Development is supporting the rescue and relief efforts of the Nippon Sei Ko Kei (NSKK; the Anglican-Episcopal Church in Japan). "There is particular concern for two churches," reported Archbishop Nathaniel Makoto Uematsu, who spoke with Bishop Kato. "Isoyama St. Peter's Church in Fukushima Prefecture and Mamaishi Shinai Church and the kindergarten in Iwate [were] close to the sea. Priests have been frantically trying to confirm that their parishioners are safe." The Archbishop went on to explain that churches int eh Kita Kanto diocese had also been affected, and that the Sendai Christchurch Cathedral had been badly damaged.
Donations can be made to the ERD Japan Earthquake Response Fund, which will provide vital support to the NSKK.

2011 Lenten Meditations from Episcopal Relief & Development: Co-authored by a group of leaders from across the Episcopal Church, the devotional offers insights on the daily lectionary readings and how we might apply them to our lives as we face a world in need.
Eco-Justice Lenten Resources: From carbon fasts to spiritual reflections on creation care and sustainability, make Lent a time to focus on eco-justice.
Lenten Series: "Where there is Despair, Hope": "...allows people to engage issues of poverty in spiritual and prayerful ways."
"Are you traveling light on the earth?"
Noting that the season of Lent has traditionally been in "solidarity with those to be baptized", Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori offers an invitation to deepen our Christian practices in her Lent 2011 message. While challenging us to "be attentive to how you live on this earth" with respect to our uses of resources, such as water and fuel, the Presiding bishop asks if we are like Jesus Christ. The Presiding Bishop's video Lenten message is available on the home page of the Episcopal Church website.
