| Prayer | | O Lord, you have taught us that without love whatever we do is worth nothing: Send your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts your greatest gift, which is love, the true bond of peace and of all virtue, without which whoever lives is accounted dead before you. Grant this for the sake of your only Son Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. - Collect for Seventh Sunday after Epiphany, Book of Common Prayer, p.216. |

| Vision for Our Diocese |
|
|
Vision: All Episcopalians in Hawai`i shall work together to create a Church filled with visible and spirit-driven Christians - Christians who are eager to share our Episcopal tradition and faith, and traditional Hawaiian spiritual values, with those who have not yet found a spiritual anchor in their lives.
Goals:
1) Convert our Hearts to Accept Jesus' Gospel Message and to Live in a Deep Relationship with God. 2) Transform the Episcopal Church in Hawai`i and Congregations to Vital and Vibrant Faith Communities. 3) Evangelize to Share God's Love in Our Communities. 4) Reduce the structure and administration costs of the Diocese so that its operations, including its bodies, are directed to supporting transformation and growth.
The Five Marks of Mission of the Worldwide Anglican Communion: 1) To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom 2) To teach, baptize and nurture new believers 3) To respond to human need by loving service 4) To seek to transform unjust structures of society 5) To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth

E-News: Staff changes, Liz sabbatical, clergy things E-News February 17, 2011
|
|
|
Greetings!
This is a different sort of e-news than the usual. Upcoming events are listed on the left. The first items announce a few changes in staff, followed by some items of special importance to clergy or lay professional employees in churches.
In addition, I am about to go on sabbatical, beginning on March 1 (a date that is coming up quite quickly!). So I'm also including here who is doing what and whom you should contact about what while I am gone.
Blessings,
Liz+

Marie Elesarke to retire Marie Elesarke, the Bishop's Secretary, has announced her retirement, effective May 31, 2011. Marie has worked in the Office of the Bishop since July 1, 1995. Coming into the office during a time of transition, she has been a valuable member of the staff, first as Administrative Assistant in the office, then working directly for then-Canon to the Ordinary Bob Fitzpatrick. When he was elected and ordained Bishop, she became his Secretary.
Marie's last day in the office will be Friday, May 23. She has promised to come to the Annual Meeting of the Convention on October 29 so that she may be suitably honored for her almost 16 years of service to the Diocese. __________________________________________________________ |
New Communications Contractor hired The advertised position of independent contractor for communications has been filled. The new Communications Contractor is Sybil Nishioka, a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Kapa'a, Kaua'i.
She will be in charge of updating the diocesan web site, sending E-News, and putting together and sending an e-Chronicle, a bi-monthly email that will report on what's been going on in the Diocese (as opposed to what is coming up, which is what E-News is for).
Sybil handles similar responsibilities for All Saints as the Family Ministries and Communications Coordinator. She is also a freelance graphic artist and the manager of All Saints' Hale Lani Christian Store.
From now on, all news items, whether coming events or past events, and all updates for the web site should be sent to Sybil Nishioka at the News email address. (Industry practice dictates that it is unwise for me to put an actual email address here. So, the address is News followed by the same ending that is on other diocesan email addresses: episcopalhawaii.org.) __________________________________________________________

Submit Continuing Ed annual report online The annual Continuing Education reports of all clergy and lay professionals in churches are due to the Continuing Education Commission on March 15.
This year, reports may be submitted via an online survey: Continuing Education Report for 2010
Alternatively, you may use the fillable Microsoft Word form that we have used for the past few years. If you use the form, please mail it to the Office of the Bishop, Attn: Continuing Education Commission, 229 Queen Emma Square, Honolulu, HI 96813.
If you have already submitted a report for 2010, you do not need to complete the online form. However, you may if you wish to do so.
The Continuing Education Commission has recently been revitalized with a new chair, the Rev. Carol Arney. This year the Commission will be reviewing the continuing education policies of the Diocese of Hawai'i.

Upcoming events for clergy
There are a few events coming up soon or scheduled for later in the year for the clergy of the Diocese. You might want to mark them on your calendar now.
Chrism Mass and Theological Education Day: Thursday, April 14 (the Thursday before Holy Week), with the Chrism Mass beginning at 9:00am, and lasting until probably 2:30 or 3:00pm. The time will be determined once we finalize the location for this event. The speaker for the Theological Education event will be Old Testament scholar Dr. Wil Gaffney. She will on sabbatical on Kauai during the spring. Presbyters' Day, Thursday, August 25: The topic for this meeting is planned to be an Acculturation Workshop. Every few years we have a workshop for clergy about the various cultures one finds here in Hawai'i. It is a good opportunity to learn about other cultures and to discuss together how best to do ministry in this context. __________________________________________________________

Who does what during Liz's sabbatical I will be on sabbatical from March 1 through June 30. I will be in Ireland for the first part of that time, learning about the Church of Ireland's formation program for ordination, and also seeing how congregations share priests in several dioceses.
So, below is a list of various things in which I am involved and whom to contact and how to reach them.

Licensed Ministries If you have people who need licensing for Eucharistic Ministers or Eucharistic Visitors, send the completed applications to the Office of the Bishop, Attn: Licensed Ministries, 229 Queen Emma Square, Honolulu, HI 96813. Norma Chun, who volunteers in the Bishop's Office, is set up to complete the licenses, and the Bishop will sign them.
If you have questions about licensed ministries - requirements, training, etc. - send them to the Commission on Ministry, which is the body responsible for setting requirements and guidelines (i.e., recommending them for approval to the Bishop). The Chair of the COM is the Rev. Marvin Foltz.
The web site contains application forms and other materials related to Licensed Ministries.

Discernment for Ministry & Ordination Process Speaking of the Commission on Ministry, this is also the body that advises the Bishop on the ordination process and assists congregations with discernment committees. Again, the Chair is the Rev. Marvin Foltz.
Any documents that need to be sent to the COM (such as discernment committee reports, Vestry or Bishop's Committee nominations, or other documents of people in the ordination process) should best be sent by mail rather than email. (Officially, they need to be sent to the Bishop anyway.) A member of the COM will be collecting the documents and making sure they end up in the proper person's file. The address is Office of the Bishop, Attn: Commission on Ministry, 229 Queen Emma Square, Honolulu, HI 96813.

Safeguarding God's Children & misconduct prevention trainings A new team is handling the Safeguarding God's Children trainings, and there are leaders who have been newly trained in offering SGC workshops. The person to contact about any of these trainings is Lani Kaaihue, Office Manager and Events Coordinator in the Office of the Bishop. __________________________________________________________

Continuing Education Applications for continuing education grants from clergy and lay professionals on church staffs should be sent to the Rev. Carol Arney, Chair of the Continuing Education Commission. They may be emailed to her, using the email link on her name (the best method), or mailed to the Office of the Bishop, Attn: Continuing Education Commission, 229 Queen Emma Square, Honolulu, HI 96813. __________________________________________________________

Deployment Then there's deployment...
Bishop Bob will be handling transitions and search processes during my absence. We all know he is already quite familiar with how to do this! __________________________________________________________
|
'Intake Officer' One of my tasks, which fortunately isn't needed very often, is to be the "intake officer" for complaints that may arise against clergy or lay leaders. The person taking that role during my absence is the Rev. David Gierlach. __________________________________________________________

Communications As announced above, the new Communications Contractor for the Diocese is Sybil Nishioka, a member of All Saints Church, Kapa'a. Use the "News" email link below to send news items to her, for either e-news or the web site.
Do not send news items to me (Liz) at my email address. Sybil will remain the person in charge of Communications, even after I return from sabbatical! __________________________________________________________
