Independent Contractor for Communications
sought for Diocese

Person needed to handle diocesan communications

An Independent Contractor for Communications is needed to handle diocesan communications. Specifically, the person would be responsible for updating the diocesan Web site and for sending electronic news and communications throughout the Diocese.

A description of the responsibilities and necessary skills is below. Interested persons should send a cover letter, resume, and writing sample to the Rev. Canon Liz Beasley by January 7, 2011.
Independent Contractor for Communications

The Independent Contractor for Communications will be responsible for updating the diocesan Web site and sending electronic news and communications throughout the Diocese using Constant Contact (or any other electronic mailing medium the Office of the Bishop might choose to use in the future).

Specifically, the person will:
  • Use the content management system for the diocesan Web site to update the Web site.
  • Use Constant Contact to send an E-News to the Diocese on a regular schedule (recommended: twice a month).
  • If desired, will send a periodic (perhaps once a month or every other month) "E-Chronicle" to the Constant Contact mailing list. (The E-News would detail upcoming events; the E-Chronicle would report on past congregational and diocesan events.)
  • Archive the E-News and E-Chronicle using the Constant Contact feature for doing so, and add those links in the appropriate places on the diocesan Web site.
  • Send other special electronic mailings as needed (for example, special e-news for registering for diocesan events, or Bishop's special letters).
  • If desired, would turn the E-News and E-Chronicle into PDF documents that could be posted on the diocesan and/or congregational Web sites.
  • Maintain the mailing lists in Constant Contact, with changes and updates supplied by the staff of the Office of the Bishop, or sent directly to the Independent Contractor for Communications.
  • Monitor the diocesan news email address to gather the news and other items for dissemination.

The Independent Contractor for Communications needs the following skills and abilities:
  • Proficiency and ease with using a computer, and the ability to learn new applications quickly.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, and a simple text editing software program (TextEdit on a Mac; NotePad on a PC).
  • Has photo-editing software and is able to use it to perform simple functions (e.g., change image size, crop an image).
  • Is knowledgeable about how Web sites are structured, the terminology used in them, and some Web conventions, such as hyperlinks, pixel dimensions, and image descriptions.
  • Is organized. Has to organize the image library in Constant Contact and the file library on the Web site, and know how best to structure items on the Web site. (This last one is with the input of the Office of the Bishop staff.)
  • Has a good knowledge of grammar and punctuation.
  • Is able to write, edit, and proofread. Needs to be able to take submissions sent by others and organize and/or edit them so as to convey the necessary information in the clearest way, or to write simple story items from snippets of information sent by others.

The Independent Contractor for Communications will serve as an independent contractor to the Office of the Bishop and needs to have his/her own computer with the necessary software programs. Must have his/her own Internet access and space in which to work.
