Prayer for Ephrem of Edessa, Deacon, 373
Pour out on us, O Lord, that same Spirit by which your deacon Ephrem rejoiced to proclaim in sacred song the mysteries of faith; and so gladden our hearts that we, like him, may be devoted to you alone; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Vision for Our Diocese

Vision:
All Episcopalians in Hawai`i shall work together to create a Church filled with visible and spirit-driven Christians - Christians who are eager to share our Episcopal tradition and faith, and traditional Hawaiian spiritual values, with those who have not yet found a spiritual anchor in their lives.

Goals:

1)  Convert our Hearts to Accept Jesus' Gospel Message and to Live in a Deep Relationship with God.
2)  Transform the Episcopal Church in Hawai`i and Congregations to Vital and Vibrant Faith Communities.
3)  Evangelize to Share God's Love in Our Communities.
4)  Reduce the structure and administration costs of the Diocese so that its operations, including its bodies, are directed to supporting transformation and growth.

The Five Marks of Mission of the Worldwide Anglican Communion:
1)  To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom
2)  To teach, baptize and nurture new believers
3)  To respond to human need by loving service
4)  To seek to transform unjust structures of society
5)  To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth

Picture yourself in the Bishop's Convention address
We're going to try again. Bishop Bob Fitzpatrick would like to include images from around the Diocese in his address to Convention. If you have images of events and people at your church (and the people don't mind their images potentially being displayed), please send them to Canon Liz Beasley.

The images should be high resolution. To avoid clogging her email inbox, you might burn the images onto a CD or DVD and mail them to her at Office of the Bishop, 229 Queen Emma Square, Honolulu, HI  96813.

Please do not send photograph prints that would need to be scanned. Electronic files only, please.

Mission Dept. offers funding for outreach ministries

The Mission Department of Diocesan Council wants all congregations to know that funds are available in the diocesan budget to support local, national or global ministries they offer or intend to offer. Eligible for support are projects that respond to social and health needs  in fulfillment of the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals adopted at General Convention and our Annual Convention in 2006.

Applications may be made by contacting Lot Lau, Mission Department Chair.  It is the department's desire that all funds in the budget be put to use in 2010.

The specific Millennium Development Goals are as follows:
1.       Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2.       Achieve universal primary education
3.       Promote gender equality and empower women
4.       Reduce gender inequality
5.       Improve maternal health
6.       Combat HIV and AIDS, malaria and other diseases
7.       Ensure environmental sustainability
8.       Create a global partnership for development with a focus on debt, aid and trade

The source of these funds is an allocation of 0.7% of the annual diocesan budget, the principal sources of which are assessments of each congregation and allocations from the diocesan investment portfolio.  More details about the uses of funds may be found on page 12 of the 2010-2012 Diocesan Budget. Click on the link to download the Budget, or go to the page of financial documents on the Episcopal Diocese of Hawai'i Web site.

Clergy transitions
The Rev. Tony Litwinski
has announced his resignation of Rector of St. James, Waimea, Big Island. He has accepted a call to St. Augustine of Canterbury in Wiesbaden, Germany. He and his wife, the Rev. Jana Johnsen, who is St. James's Director of 'Ohana Ministries, plan to make the move from Hawai'i to Germany sometime in August.

The Rev. Moki Hino ended his position as Canon Pastor at the Cathedral of St. Andrew on March 31, because the position was eliminated. Hino spent the following six weeks assisting the churches in the Episcopal Church of Micronesia, over which Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick has oversight. Hino has accepted a position as a teacher at St. Andrew's Priory School and will be a Priest Associate at the Church of the Epiphany, Honolulu (Kaimuki). He is also available for supply.

Supply at St. Augustine's & vacation, too
The following comes from the Bishop's Warden at St. Augustine's to clergy of the Diocese:

Greetings from St. Augustine's in Kapa'au:
St. Augustine vicarage
St. Augustine house

Our vicar, Tom Buechele, will be retiring from his ministry at St. Augustine's on July 1, 2010. Our search for a new vicar is just beginning.  We will be in need of supply clergy for the next several months.

Our recently renovated and newly furnished vicarage will be available to visiting clergy for either weekend visits or longer stays. The vicarage is suitable for a single, couple, or family of four. Pictures are available on request. We would of course provide transportation as well and the going rate of compensation for supply clergy.

I would welcome responses from all who are interested. As you may know, we have been offering the vicarage the past few months as a clergy retreat.  Recent visitors include Bill Allport, Honey Becker, and Kate Lewis. If you need references or testimonies as to the beauty and wonder of North Kohala, please ask them to share.

St. Augustine's is a very active, loving and welcoming congregation. Our Sunday service is followed by a sumptuous brunch and lively conversation. We would look forward to your offering us the Eucharist and preaching. Mahalo for your interest.

Presiding Bishop issues Pastoral Letter
Presiding BishopOn June 2, 2010, Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori issued a Pastoral Letter to the Episcopal Church, entitled "Pentecost continues!"

The letter begins:
"Pentecost is most fundamentally a continuing gift of the Spirit, rather than a limitation or quenching of that Spirit.

"The recent statement by the Archbishop of Canterbury about the struggles within the Anglican Communion seems to equate Pentecost with a single understanding of gospel realities.  Those who received the gift of the Spirit on that day all heard good news.  The crowd reported, 'in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power' (Acts 2:11)...."

Later that day, Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick forwarded the pastoral letter to all clergy in charge of congregations and to all wardens, asking that it be made available to the congregations.

The letter may be read in its entirety here.

It is also available in audio on the home page of the Episcopal Church Web site.

Pilgrimage to Holy Land in September
JerusalemA two-week pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land will be held from September 11-23, 2010, led by the Rev. Carol Arney and the Rev. David Jackson. Arney is Rector of Good Samaritan, Honolulu, and Jackson is Rector of Epiphany, Honolulu.

From the trip's brochure: "Our trip will be a true pilgrimage with worship, spiritual reflection and bible study woven into the fabric of the journey. We will have a chance to renew our baptismal vows in the Jordan River on our journey. We will be lodging at the Guest House at St. George's Cathedral and visitor center in Jerusalem for most of our stay. This is the heart of the Anglican/Episcopal presence in Israel and Palestine. After getting to know the Holy City of Jerusalem, we will travel to Galilee, the childhood home of Jesus, and the place where he began his ministry."

Call the Rev. David Jackson at (808) 734-5706 or the Rev. Carol Arney at (808) 735-5944 or 734-5632 today for more information and to reserve your place. Or see the Web site below:
