| Prayer for Ascension Day
|
| Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. - from Book of Common Prayer, p. 226.

Vision: All Episcopalians in Hawai`i shall work together to create a Church filled with visible and spirit-driven Christians - Christians who are eager to share our Episcopal tradition and faith, and traditional Hawaiian spiritual values, with those who have not yet found a spiritual anchor in their lives.
Goals:
1) Convert our Hearts to Accept Jesus' Gospel Message and to Live in a Deep Relationship with God. 2) Transform the Episcopal Church in Hawai`i and Congregations to Vital and Vibrant Faith Communities. 3) Evangelize to Share God's Love in Our Communities. 4) Reduce the structure and administration costs of the Diocese so that its operations, including its bodies, are directed to supporting transformation and growth.
The Five Marks of Mission of the Worldwide Anglican Communion: 1) To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom 2) To teach, baptize and nurture new believers 3) To respond to human need by loving service 4) To seek to transform unjust structures of society 5) To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth

Cathedral to hold special Ascension Day Evensong The Cathedral of St. Andrew will hold an Evensong service this coming Thursday, May 13, at 5:30 p.m.
Ascension Day is one of the Principal Prayer Book Feasts, equal in importance to Christmas, Epiphany and Pentecost! The Feast commemorates the ascension of Jesus into heaven (Acts 1:6-11) following his crucifixion and resurrection.
This year's feast will be marked by the premiere performance of the setting of the evening canticles (Magnificat and Nunc dimittis) composed by the Cathedral's Organ Scholar, Yuri McCoy. This setting is composed for organ, trumpet, soprano solo and choir.
Yuri writes: "I began composing my setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis during the Spring of 2009. I was initially inspired after the joint-choir Evensong with the Honolulu Lutheran Church a year ago; that night featured Herbert Howell's setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis. I consulted Herbert Howell's setting throughout the compositional process. The piece began as a labor of love; it was never my intention to receive university credit for the work. But, last semester I enrolled in composition lessons for the first time. Though the work was mostly complete prior to my first lesson, much of the semester was spent putting the finishing touches on the score. My Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis is dedicated to the choirs of St. Andrew's Cathedral, but is also my personal musical offering to God." __________________________________________________________

Sexton leaving; Bishop to appoint Dean by Advent
The Rev. Timothy Sexton will be departing his position as Provost of the Cathedral of St. Andrew, Honolulu, as of June 30. His last Sunday will be June 6, with his last day in the office the following week.
Sexton originally joined the Cathedral staff over five years ago as the Canon Administrator. He became Provost in March 2007. The office of Provost is essentially a transitional Priest-in-Charge position.
Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick sent a letter to the Cathedral membership on April 20 announcing Sexton's departure. The Bishop, who has been serving as the Dean for about a year, also said in that letter that he will be conducting a broad search for a new Dean. It is the hope that the Bishop will extend a call by the First Sunday in Advent, with the new Dean taking up duties in early 2011. __________________________________________________________

Rummage Sale to help school in Kalihi
The Cathedral of St. Andrew will held their annual rummage sale the
weekend of June 25-27. This year, the proceeds will benefit Kalihi Waena Elementary
School on Gulick Avenue in Kalihi.
Kalihi Waena's location in an area of the city where resources are few
and children's needs are plentiful makes this an especially worthy project for
the Cathedral Outreach committee. The rummage sale funds will help the school
pay for cafeteria meals, student field trips, computer printers, miscellaneous
school supplies, and more.
The
sale will be held in Davies Hall and on the Cathedral grounds at the following days and times:
Friday, June
25, from 4:30 - 8:00 pm Saturday, June 26, from 9:00 - 2:00 pm Sunday, June 27, following the 7, 8, and 10 am services __________________________________________________________

Pilgrimage to Holy Land in September
A two-week pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land will be held from September 11-23, 2010, led by the Rev. Carol Arney and the Rev. David Jackson. Arney is Rector of Good Samaritan, Honolulu, and Jackson is Rector of Epiphany, Honolulu.
From the trip's brochure: "Our trip will be a true pilgrimage with worship, spiritual reflection and bible study woven into the fabric of the journey. We will have a chance to renew our baptismal vows in the Jordan River on our journey. We will be lodging at the Guest House at St. George's Cathedral and visitor center in Jerusalem for most of our stay. This is the heart of the Anglican/Episcopal presence in Israel and Palestine. After getting to know the Holy City of Jerusalem, we will travel to Galilee, the childhood home of Jesus, and the place where he began his ministry."
Call the Rev. David Jackson at (808) 734-5706 or the Rev. Carol Arney at (808) 735-5944 or 734-5632 today for more information and to reserve your place. Or see the Web site below:

Cathedral and Bishop's Offices closed to outside on Mondays Effective immediately, the Cathedral office and the Office of the Bishop will be closed every Monday for an in-office staff work day. This means that as a general rule, the Memorial Building door bell and phones will not be answered on Mondays. This will enable staff to catch-up on important work and work even more efficiently. Since there are no clergy present in either office on Mondays, this move is also for the safety and security of the staff.
Regular office hours will remain in effect Tuesday through Friday. These are 9 am to 5 pm in the Cathedral office, and 8 am to 4 pm in the Office of the Bishop.
Mahalo for your understanding and kokua! __________________________________________________________

Bishop's Office needs volunteer help The Office of the Bishop seeks individuals who are willing to volunteer to provide clerical help to the staff. A variety of tasks are available (such as filing, computer work, photocopying, and compiling mailings) and therefore a variety of talents are needed. One thing that would be especially useful is a person with proficiency on a computer.
If you are able and interested in volunteering, please make an initial contact to Canon Liz Beasley, either by using the link on the name or by replying to this email. __________________________________________________________

Supply clergy: Please send info
Thank you to all the supply clergy who have sent their information for posting to the Web site.
If you are willing to be a supply clergy in the Diocese, and are not on the list, please let Canon Liz Beasley know. We need to make sure that our new Web site has an up-to-date and correct list.
Please include in your email your contact information, and whether or not you are willing to travel to islands other than the one on which you live.
