Prayer for the Second Sunday after the Epiphany
Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ's glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
- from Book of Common Prayer, p. 215.
Vision for Our Diocese

Vision:
All Episcopalians in Hawai`i shall work together to create a Church filled with visible and spirit-driven Christians - Christians who are eager to share our Episcopal tradition and faith, and traditional Hawaiian spiritual values, with those who have not yet found a spiritual anchor in their lives.

Goals:

1)  Convert our Hearts to Accept Jesus' Gospel Message and to Live in a Deep Relationship with God.
2)  Transform the Episcopal Church in Hawai`i and Congregations to Vital and Vibrant Faith Communities.
3)  Evangelize to Share God's Love in Our Communities.
4)  Reduce the structure and administration costs of the Diocese so that its operations, including its bodies, are directed to supporting transformation and growth.

The Five Marks of Mission of the Worldwide Anglican Communion:
1)  To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom
2)  To teach, baptize and nurture new believers
3)  To respond to human need by loving service
4)  To seek to transform unjust structures of society
5)  To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth

Jefferts SchoriPresiding Bishop's message about Haiti
[January 13, 2010] Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has issued the following concerning the January 12 earthquake in Haiti:

The people of Haiti have suffered a devastating earthquake, and it is already clear that many have died and many more are injured. Even under "normal" circumstances, Haiti struggles to care for her 9 million people. The nation is the poorest in the western hemisphere, and this latest disaster will set back many recent efforts at development. I urge your prayers for those who have died, been injured, and are searching for loved ones - and I urge your concrete and immediate prayers in the form of contributions to Episcopal Relief & Development, who are already working with the Diocese of Haiti to send aid where it is most needed.

St. Andrew's hosts service for Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
January 18-25 is the annual observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. An annual ecumenical worship service will be held on O'ahu on Wednesday, January 20, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Andrew's Cathedral. The Rev. Charles Buck, Conference Minister of the United Church of Christ, will be preaching.

The theme for the 2010 observance is "You Are Witnesses of These Things" (Luke 24:48).

The public is invited. Clergy are invited to vest and process. Vestments should be non-Eucharistic choir vestments (i.e., cassock and surplice, with scarf or tippet).
Safeguarding God's Children training on Maui
Safeguarding God's Children provides a basic understanding of the dynamics of child sexual abuse, how to recognize signs that a child may have been abused, and what to do if you have concerns about a person's behavior toward a child or youth, or if you suspect that a child or youth has been molested. This training is suitable for all adults concerned about children and youth. It offers steps you can take to prevent child sexual abuse in church and other organizational settings.

Three hours of child abuse prevention education and training is required for all CHURCH PERSONNEL WHO REGULARLY WORK WITH OR AROUND CHILDREN OR YOUTH before they start their work with children or youth or, if that is not possible, one hour of child abuse awareness training before they start their work and the rest of the training within three months of starting.

Safeguarding God's Children fulfills this requirement. Training will be offered January 25, 2010 at 6:00pm at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. Please register your attendance by calling 244-4656.

Learn about Anglo-Catholicism
What is the history of the Anglo-Catholic movement? What is the Society of Catholic Priests?  How do I make my confession? What is a maniple?  Why do we pray the Stations of the Cross during Lent? Why is music so integral in an Anglo-Catholic parish? What is the proper use of Sanctus Bells, incense, and holy water?...

These and other questions will be discussed at St. Mark's Church, Kapahulu, on Tuesday nights in January and February at a study of Anglo-Catholic History, Spirituality, and Practice. The presenter is the Very Rev. John Kevern, former dean of Bexley Hall Seminary in Columbus, Ohio.

During our walk, there will be opportunities for silence as well as conversation, with readings of excerpts from Rev. King's "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" and other writings.

The Kealia Trail is an intermediate 2.5-mile trail of exposed ridgeline, that gradually increases over rock switchbacks to the 1,000-foot cliff.

All are encouraged to sign up, especially those who may need transportation, by contacting the Rev. Michael Barham by email or by phone at (808) 955-7745, x34.
Workshop in writing psalms and poetry
Author Ray McGinnis will lead a workshop entitled "Writing the sacred:  A psalm-writing and poem-making workshop" at St. Andrew's Cathedral on Monday, February 8, from 6:30 - 9:00 p.m.

Come play with words and discover how writing can be a pathway through which you can creatively express your life's experiences and insights in your walk with God.

Participants will be invited to re-discover the power of the Hebrew Psalms, and to discover how the Psalms can act as a catalyst to express one's own contemporary longings for God. Together with selected poems from other poets ranging from St. Francis of Assisi, Rumi, Emily Dickinson, Leonard Cohen and Mary Oliver, Ray McGinnis will help you, step-by-step, discover the writer, poet and Psalmist living within you.

Ray McGinnis is author of Writing the Sacred, now in its third printing.  Ray lives in Vancouver and is working on a forthcoming book of poetry drawn from his many treks along nature trails. For more information about him, visit his website.

RSVP by leaving your name, phone number, and email address at 524-2822, x508 or by email. Space may be limited.
