Prayer for Hildegard
God of all times and seasons: Give us grace that we, after the example of your servant Hildegard, may both know and make known the joy and jubilation of being part of your creation, and show forth your glory not only with our lips but in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Vision for Our Diocese

Vision:
All Episcopalians in Hawai`i shall work together to create a Church filled with visible and spirit-driven Christians - Christians who are eager to share our Episcopal tradition and faith, and traditional Hawaiian spiritual values, with those who have not yet found a spiritual anchor in their lives.

Goals:

1)  Convert our Hearts to Accept Jesus' Gospel Message and to Live in a Deep Relationship with God.
2)  Transform the Episcopal Church in Hawai`i and Congregations to Vital and Vibrant Faith Communities.
3)  Evangelize to Share God's Love in Our Communities.
4)  Reduce the structure and administration costs of the Diocese so that its operations, including its bodies, are directed to supporting transformation and growth.

The Five Marks of Mission of the Worldwide Anglican Communion:
1)  To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom
2)  To teach, baptize and nurture new believers
3)  To respond to human need by loving service
4)  To seek to transform unjust structures of society
5)  To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth

Discuss health care reform (in a civil way!)
On Wednesday, Sept 23, at 6:30 pm, St. Clement's, Honolulu, will host a discussion on a Christian perspective on national health reform. And, yes, the plan is to talk about this in a civil way because that's who we are as Christians! This is not one of those political town meetings where people shout at each other.

There will be some background material available in the back of the church on Sunday morning and maybe even electronically early in the week. (If you want to contribute helpful background material that could be distributed, please send the Rev. Liz Zivanov an email.) The church has quite a few doctors and other medical professionals in the congregation, so this should be a most interesting discussion.

Check St. Clement's facebook site or the parish web site for more info.
General Convention debrief meeting at Epiphany
One more meeting for members of the Diocese to hear from and ask questions of deputies to the General Convention in July has been scheduled, this one at Epiphany Church, Honolulu (Kaimuki), on Wednesday, September 23, at 6:00 pm. There will be at least two deputies at the meeting, one clergy and one lay.

If you would like to attend a meeting but one has not been scheduled in your region, please contact the Rev. Canon Liz Beasley or, after September 26, Lot Lau.

Resource for hosting a congregational web site
Having a congregational web site is a vital tool for evangelism in today's society, where many people find a church by looking on the Internet.

One crucial ingredient in having a web site is a "hosting service": a place that holds your web pages. Hosting services are often expensive.

Episcopal Church Web Hosting (www.ecwh.org), an entity of The Episcopal Church, has a relationship with Dragon Networks of Tucker, Georgia (dragon.com), that offers free basic hosting services for Episcopal "entities."

If you would like to hear how another congregation has used this service, St. Peter's, Honolulu, has found it to be easy, user-friendly, and expandable (St. Peter's pays less than $100/year).
Second mission trip to New Orleans in November
A group from the Diocese of Hawai'i will be heading to New Orleans for our second mission trip to help the ongoing recovery four years after the city was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. We join almost 10,000 volunteers to date who have worked through the auspices of the Episcopal Diocese.

The trip is planned for Friday, November 6 to Monday, November 16.  The group is scheduled to continue with rebuilding houses as this is still a primary focus. And, there are other opportunities for ministry.

Be prepared for flu season
Flu FlyerFall is near, which means we all need to prepare for cold and flu season. Each year, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized and 36,000 people die from seasonal flu complications in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This year, there is a new and very different flu virus spreading worldwide among people called novel or new H1N1 flu. The CDC suggests that this virus may cause more illness or more severe illness than usual.

In order to prepare for the upcoming cold and flu season, the Medical Trust has created posters with tips to protect yourself and others from influenza. Attached, you will find a preview of the poster. The poster will be available later this month or early next month and we are currently accepting requests for them. The poster will be available in two sizes (8 ½X 11) and (11x17). These posters are great to place in bathrooms, kitchens, elevators, nurseries, daycare centers and parishes. Please email Stephanie Aballay if you are interested in receiving some posters. Include the quantity and size you wish to receive.

The Medical Trust encourages you to stay informed, stay healthy, and be prepared for the upcoming cold and flu season so that we are Well to Serve.
Collegium for small congregations to focus on leadership
Applications are now available for the Summer Collegium, a project in support of small congregations at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia. Clergy (and their spouses or partners) from 25 small churches of all Christian denominations are invited to spend nine days at Virginia Seminary for encouragement, education, rest and renewal. All expenses, including travel, books, meals, lodging, child care at home and pulpit supply, are paid by a grant from the Lilly Endowment.

The theme of the Summer Collegium this year is Leadership in the Small Congregation.  Our keynote speaker will be Alice Mann, a prolific writer on congregational ministry, and John Bell from the Iona Community in Scotland will join our worship team for the conference.

The dates for the Summer Collegium are June 23 - July 1, 2010.  Application forms may be found at the Summer Collegium web site, or will be sent in the mail by emailing the Collegium or by calling 703-461-1760. Applications must be postmarked by December 15, 2009, to be considered.
