Old Family PictureTips On How To Save
Your Old Family Photos

If you have old family photos, you want to be able to preserve them as long as possible, especially if you only have one copy.

First of all, if you have pictures and the negatives, you need to make sure that you keep these away from each other. If they are stored together, you are increasing the odds that you will lose them both.

Get multiple copies of your photos if you still have the negatives. This will allow you to not only have fresh prints, but to have duplicates as well.

When handling very old photographs, consider wearing gloves to protect them from the oil on your skin, which can yellow the photos over time.

Know your products!  The adhesives you choose could be damaging the very photos you are trying so hard to protect!  The following materials should be avoided: synthetic glue (white glue), rubber cement, pressure-sensitive tapes and films, staples, or hot glue gun adhesives.

If you have photos that you would like to sort into archival quality albums, call Marylu Gray with Creative Memories.  She can help you make it happen!  503-774-5268.

Consider scanning your photos and going digital. This will allow you to make unlimited copies, keep them forever, and easily share them with family and friends.

Use a photo organization program such as Picassa, to help you. When you do this, it's much easier to make albums of certain events or certain people. This process can take some time, but it's worth it.

If you need help in completing this project, check out the info below from Sean Minogue, with Director's Chair Studio.  This is what they do, and they do it very well!

Our treasured family photos are often stored in shoe boxes and paper bags. We are far more likely to trip over them than we are to sit and savor the memories they represent.

"I believe that the process of sorting, organizing and showcasing family photo collections is the task most likely to be put on the back burner. Many times I've worked with a family's photographs and found their archive is made up of bundles of collections that have come from different family members and remain undisturbed in that original packaging. Packaging that may well be causing those images to discolor, fade and deteriorate.

We are able to physically sort the photos by type, era, subject or what have you. Then we carefully remove surface dust and scan them into a computer. The scans are reviewed and images may at this point be color corrected or otherwise enhanced. Then we sort according to client specifications. For example categories may be military photos, school photos, Christmas scenes or camping trips. Finally, the images are stored on a computer disc or DVD. Multiple copies of the disc are easily made and presented to each member of the family.

Beyond that we are able to work with our clients to create a photo montage video that blends the scanned photos, music and memorabilia to create a "slide show on steroids" that will truly take those long neglected photos from static to dramatic."
