Spring Cleaning Tips By Amy Boggs, owner Sparkling Palaces The birds are chirping, the tulips are peeking their heads out of the soil and the warmer weather reminds us it's time to clean out the garage, clean out our closets and break out the patio furniture! Spring-cleaning can seem overwhelming, not to mention the plethora of cleaning products from which to choose. If you're like us, you're interested in not only getting the job done, but also doing it in an eco-friendly way. At Sparkling Palaces, we're experts in all things green and clean. So here are a few tips to inspire and help you along the way.
Clean your indoor air naturally: Plants are perfect for natural air cleansing, and they look nice. Choose a broad green leaf plant, such as the Peace Lilly. Looking for that fresh smell? Skip the store-bought air fresheners and instead try boiling cinnamon or cloves, or baking up some delicious chocolate chip cookies. Employ a green house cleaning service: This looks like a shameless plug, but let's be honest- most people don't always have time to clean their own homes. Fortunately there are an increasing number of green cleaning services out there to help get things spic and span. Find one who is licensed and bonded, and be sure to ask them what "green" means to them. Do they just talk the talk, or do they walk the walk? Leave the toxins at the door: Imagine what's on your shoes at the end of the day! Keep the sidewalk out of your home with a good doormat or a shoeless house policy. Less dirt also means less sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming, which means less work, water, energy, and fewer chemicals. Use Green cleaning products: It may seem obvious, but simply switching out your bleach and other household cleaners is a simple way to go green. If designer labels (and sometimes price tags) aren't for you, home-mixed cleaners can get the job done and then some. Vinegar and baking soda can be used to clean almost anything. Mix in a little warm water with either of these and you've got yourself an all-purpose cleaner. We hope these tips will help you along the way to a cleaner, and greener, household. Happy cleaning! Clearing out Your Email
T-R-A-S-H system from "How to Organize Your Life & Get Rid of Clutter" T stands for Toss-It. One study estimates that 80% of incoming e-mail was unnecessary. R stands for Refer It. Send the E-mail to the rightful owner. Always ask yourself if I am the one who needs to have this e-mail. I may not be the rightful owner, but possession is 9/10 of the law. Because I left it sitting and didn't forward it, I may now have to do the task. A stands for Act On It. Just do it now. A favorite way to tackle items that have been put off is to do the worst first. If I can get the worst thing in my e-mail or on my desk done-everything else is easier. S stands for Save It. Put it away to be acted on later. Decide the date when it's best to act on the item and then put it out of sight. H stands for Halt It. Halt It means to get off the list. Whether it's a newsletter, quote of the day, whatever-ask yourself, "How is this helping me?" If you can't answer it, unsubscribe. Delete everything you can when you first see it. Then you should handle any 2-minute-or-less actions and responses immediately. Next, get any purely reference e-mails out of the inbox and into folders. The folders can be organized by theme, topic, project, or person.
